- My mommy sent me cookies! Not homemade, but still. And they came tied up with a red ribbon, so even my cat was happy.

- Got a lot more done at the archive today. The archivist contacted someone she knew in the Women's Studies department, and she said that the letters I'd found sounded interesting and she gave me some links to check out. Sweet!

- It's only just 8:00, and it's already dark. :( This is sad-making.

- "The Big Bang Theory" is very cute! I've only seen four episodes, but I've decided that I like it...so far. Please tell me that Leslie Winkler returns. Luminous fish as night lights! Awwww, Sheldon.

- Also watched TOS "Private Little War" and "Return To Tomorrow." Some thoughts, with pictures. )
thistlerose: (Star Trek: original)
Last night, I watched "Catspaw" and "A Piece of the Action," both from S2. I hadn't planned on it, but three minutes into the former, I realized I was going to need a drink, so I poured a glass of white wine and settled back. My thoughts, with screen caps. Definitely work safe, but not necessarily dial up friendly. )

In summary: LOLWHAT.
thistlerose: (Milwaukee)
Whoa, I moved out of my mother's house in Minnesota a year ago today. Due to an unfortunate miscommunication, I did not get to move into my apartment here in Milwaukee until the 12th. Actually, my dumb cats got to move in on the 11th. It was an adventure. Anyhow! Looking back, I can say something I haven't been able to say in quite a while: it's been a pretty good year for me! And I think next year is going to be good for me too. Busy as hell, but in a good way. I'm not even scared of thirty, which is looming on the horizon. Bring it.

_____

Mmm, I chilled from rooibos tea last night. It's quite good over milk, honey, and ice.

_____

OMG, the beast is... pacified! I mean, my big Kirk/McCoy epic, The Next Time You Say Forever is all done and posted and I like it. 26,980 words. Holy crap. It did get longer than "Three Weeks Outside Time." I really am kind of ridiculously pleased with it. And proud of myself for writing it at all. I can be such a flake.

I have two projects on the front burner at the moment, both ST. One is about Spock and McCoy (and Spock/McCoy) in TOS. Well, it's mostly TOS. It dovetails Reboot at the end. It's epic in that it spans about 100 years. But I doubt it will be more than 4,000 words. Famous last words. Uh, the other one is Reboot. Kirk is trying to befriend Uhura and - for reasons she has yet to reveal to me - she's resisting him. Really, he's only trying to befriend her. (This is post-film.)

Then there's that big old Pern AU, which is still only a chapter and a half written.

And wasn't I supposed to be working on something original this summer?

_____

Anyhow, I watched the pilot episode of "The Big Bang Theory" last night. I can see why my mother and sister didn't like it, but I thought it was cute! I shall watch some more. I do hope they get some female geniuses in the case, though. I suspect they will, or I doubt my best friend would like it as much as she does.

I also watched more TOS. *facepalm* My thoughts on 'The Apple,' with visual aids. )

Hmm, health insurance expires today, and I can't order more until the check from financial aid comes... on the 20th. I'll just have to be very careful. *puts knives away slooooowly* Though I think it's retroactive, so if anything does happen... Why don't I just stop thinking about that?

Epic fic is all done! I mean, it's all edited to my satisfaction and just waiting to be posted. Which... I was going to space it out over the next week and a half, but we'll see. The more it just sits there, the more I worry that something will happen to it. The computer and the flash drive will combust spontaneously or something. So. If I make it back from the campus - where I need to do paperwork tomorrow - alive, maybe I'll post Chapter Four. That's the chapter with all the violence!

Meantime, I started three new fics. *facepalm* But two of them are about Uhura, whom I've been ignoring, so.

I've named the spiders Baguette (left mirror) and Brie (right). Thank you, [livejournal.com profile] mysid! ♥

Oh, and I've started Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" finally, and so far it's well written, but I'm guessing I'm supposed to swoon for Jamie MacTavish, and right now he just seems a bit too perfect. But I've only read the first 100 pages, so.

Aaaand, I watched more TOS: Is There in Truth No Beauty? and For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky )

Oh, lovely rain! Keep falling; my car needs washing.

How is it August already? How is the summer two-thirds gone? I've accomplished some of my goals: I traveled a little, got an internship lined up for the autumn, and I've written, albeit Star Trek fics and not my novel as intended.

This is what I posted in July:

Tomorrow and Tomorrow
Fandom: Star Trek TOS
Characters/Ships: McCoy/Spock
Rating: teen(ish)
Summary: Something's been nagging at McCoy since he and Spock escaped from planet Sarpeidon's icy past. Recommended viewing: "The Empath" and "All Our Yesterdays." 1,800 words.

Tea and Dinosaurs (In Space!)
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Characters/Ships: McCoy/Kirk
Rating: teen
Summary: There's still no cure for the common cold in the twenty-third century. Fortunately, Kirk has a very indulgent CMO. 1,090 words.

The Next Time You Say Forever
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Characters/Ships: Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura, others inferred along the way
Rating: Adult
Summary: After his ex-wife's death, McCoy is forced to leave the Enterprise to look after his teenage daughter. Under normal circumstances, this would be the end of…whatever it is he has with Kirk that's more than friendship, but less than what he wants. But the universe has other intentions. At present, only the first two chapters are on-line, and they are 4,000 and 2,050 words respectively. Chapter Three should be ready Monday. There'll be six chapters all together, with a grand total of about 26,000 words. Dude.

_____

Current fic projects:

- that epic Pern AU, where Kylara tries to take over the world and Brekke grows a spine
- a short Pern fic about Mirrim and T'gellan finally reaching an understanding
- a fairly short five things fic about why Kirk loves his mom
- something Uhura-centric, preferably involving ancient inscriptions and maybe time travel
- more TOS!style Spock/Bones because ♥ ♥ ♥

And I watched some tv:

Star Trek TOS: Friday's Child )

That said, I've gotten pretty OTP about Spock/McCoy, at least in TOS. So, I read the whole essay on [community profile] ship_manifesto. And okay, I don't agree with all the points the author made, but I still ship it liek whoa. But then I got to the end, and ALL THE LINKS TO THE ARCHIVES WERE DEAD. *sulk*

Slings and Arrows: 2x05 )

Yesterday was one of those coldish summer days that I so love. The kind that makes me want to go for a swim (or go for a long bike ride along the lake, which is what I ended up doing) just so I come back home chilled enough to slip into my sweats and enjoy a cup (or three or four) of hot tea. Mmmm.

My cat has been so damn needy lately, I don't even know. It's like I left her for a month, not two measly days. ALL the time is cuddle time. (Yesterday afternoon, while I was trying to type, she decided to use my wrist as a pillow. Which is very sweet, but dammit, Sophie.) I ♥ my co-dependent little beastie.

Speaking of insane things: Tea and Dinosaurs (In Space!) seems to have gone over well. *glee* You guys rock my socks.

Um. So, I skipped Torchwood in favor of more TOS reruns, so I guess I have a Torchwood double feature tonight. What a hardship. :P

I watched Bread and Circuses and Wolf in the Fold from S2 )
thistlerose: (seasonal)
Why is it that mere days after buying an A/C and having it installed, it's 60 degrees and drizzly? Stupid weather.

I finished everything on my to-do list! Okay, so one of them was remembering to charge my cell phone and another was writing a to-do list for the catsitter. Still! It's nice seeing everything on that list crossed off.

I even had time to watch a little more TOS. Court Martial, The Doomsday Machine, and All Our Yesterdays...in a nutshell )

Now I think I'm going to make some tea and curl up with my book.
thistlerose: (Default)
- Bought groceries for the first time since repairing the fridge. Salad! Cheese! Milk for my cereal! SO nice having these things, knowing that they won't have gone bad by tomorrow morning.

- Scotty/Gaila wedding fic is kindasorta finished and has been sent to my lovely beta reader. Wheee! Ack. There's a reason I don't write much wedding fic. In fact, the only one I can remember writing was Duo and Hilde's, and that was...like seven years ago. Meep. I've only ever been to one wedding in my life, and it was best friend's and I was the maid of honor, so I was a little too euphoric to make any real observations. So, yeah. Not a whole lot of experience to draw on.

- I think I love most of the fic. (The Scotty/Gaila one, I mean.) I'm just not sure about the final scene. Hmmm.

- But I wanted to know how they do weddings in Star Trek, so I watched the TOS episode "Balance of Terror." That was a good episode! )
thistlerose: (Default)
- I posted a ficlet yesterday, maybe two minutes before the Internet exploded with news of Michael Jackson's untimely death. The Dangers of Improper Usage, in which Lieutenant Uhura saves the day with grammar. It's about 470 words, totally gen, safe for all ages.

- 3,300 words of Scotty/Gaila romcom written. Right now, it's more rom than com, but I'll get it back on track. I'm not quite sure why I've latched onto this ship, which has no basis in canon, but I love it.

- I'm so tired. I still haven't been sleeping all that well. This morning, I got up at about 6:45, had an early breakfast, and went for a two mile bike ride. It was very pleasant. Sunny, but not too hot. I actually turned off the A/C.

- [personal profile] flyingcarpet and I met up online and watched "The Way To Eden," which...deserves its reputation as one of the worst TOS episodes of all time. *g* We knew what we were doing, but I don't remember the reasoning behind the decision. Ummm...wow. O_o Like, the kernel of the episode wasn't so bad (I don't mean space hippies specifically, but a group of people rejecting the ubiquity of technology) but the execution was kind of mind-bogglingly ham-fisted. And ridiculous.

- Speaking of [personal profile] flyingcarpet, if you ship Kirk/McCoy, you should read her new fic, Acts of Faith, because it is seriously awesome. It's gotten to the point where I have Opinions on how these characters ought to be written, and she does it right.

- Um. Eep, I'm tired. It's the wine. It makes me sleepy. Also, the not sleeping. That makes me sleepy too.

- I have seventeen bruises from carrying the A/C up to my third-floor apartment. And then dropping it on my arm. I'm supposed to be in a bathing suit this time next week. Um. Yeah, we'll see about that.

- There's some nostalgia for Sirius/Remus going around at the moment, and I'm just not feeling it. I thought maybe I would by this point, but I don't. I remember loving the characters and the ship, but I was so burnt out by the end of 2007 that the part of my heart that they occupy is out of service.
thistlerose: (Star Trek)
Mmm, air conditioning. Right now, I love almost everyone in the world. Just so you know.

I watched Shore Leave & Journey To Babel )
thistlerose: (Default)
Holy crap, taking the car to school today was smart. It's hot out there, man. Just walking from the car to Bolton Hall and back was painful, and I was wearing a light cotton skirt. On the way home, I stopped by Sendik's and got a precooked chicken for my Will-cat. I hope he's feeling very loved right now. :) It's a little hard to believe that I've had this cat for half my life. He's been with me through some tough times; I've got to spoil him. And if Sophie benefits, Sophie benefits.

Anyway, since I'm writing about Mr. Scott in love, I thought I'd do some research by watching "The Lights of Zetar" over lunch. So, what's Mister Scott like when he's in love? )
thistlerose: (Default)
- It's supposed to be really hot today and there's an air quality warning. Trying to decide if I should bike to campus, take the car and pay/search for parking, or say the hell with it and hope it cools down in the next few days. :P I kind of want to get out today anyway, since...I'm really craving avocados for some reason!

- Will seems a lot happier since I put him on an all-canned food diet. He and Sophie get a can a day. I feel like a real asshole for not figuring that out sooner. Sorry, baby-cat.

- Now I have 1,700 words of Scotty/Gaila romcom written! And I've figured out how to include Sulu. But not Chekov. He's like half Scotty's age and they work in different areas; I'm not sure why they'd interact at all. I want this to be an ensemble piece, but... And should Gaila call Scotty Monty? I know people have strong thoughts on fan-made nicknames. At least, they did in the Harry Potter fandom. O_o

- I really watch too much tv.
