Eeee! I got a Remix Madness story! And it's lovely:

They Say It's Your Birthday (The Five By Five Remix) (2744 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies)
Rating: Not Rated
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Christine Chapel/Gaila
Characters: Christine Chapel, Gaila (Star Trek), Leonard McCoy, Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, Joanna McCoy
Summary:

Sometimes simple things aren't easy on the Enterprise, like protecting your away team from sex pollen, having lunch with your girlfriend, or talking to your daughter on her birthday.

Whoever you are, Anonymous Author, thank you for taking my random little scene and turning it into an ACTUAL story.
thistlerose: (X-Men: Alex/Darwin)
Quick rec:

A Battle, A War, Growing Up by [livejournal.com profile] visiblefic
X-Men: First Class | R (mostly for sex and language, but see warnings) | Darwin/Alex | Author's summary: "Darwin/Alex roadtrip, featuring: angst, self-hatred, sweetness, literary allusions, poetry, boys circling each other and being tentative, a hopeful ending made sad in light of how the movie goes, some geographic fuckery in order to indulge my highway fangirling, and more!"

I'm mostly done with this fandom, but I make an exception for my under-appreciated OTP, especially when it's in-universe, angsty, sexy, and in-character. Oh, my boys.

Hmm, some day I'm going to have to compile a list of my favorite Darwin/Alex stories. Unfortunately, I suck at remembering what I've read.
thistlerose: (Default)
I'm still alive, in case anyone's curious. Just not feeling very communicative. My emotions have been yoyo-ing for about the past week and a half. I know I should do a write-up of my college reunion, and I will, but - not right now. If we're Facebook friends, you can see my photos there.

I finished Avatar: The Last Air Bender. Now I want to go back and watch it from the beginning, but I think I should catch up with Korra first. A few random impressions & questions. )

I also watched the season finale of Glee. And was mostly underwhelmed. )

Quick fic rec for anyone else who felt there wasn't enough Santana/Brittany in the season finale:

Not An Option (Rated R, though I think I'd call it NC-17. Spoilers for 3x22.) I love the way this author writes Santana. She's angry and passionate and needy and determined. Love her. And the sex is hot.
thistlerose: (Default)
Given what I've read, I think I'm going to skip this past weekend's episode of "Game of Thrones."

___

I got four remixes for Remix Madness! Makes me wish I had the time to write more than two (and I still think you should be able to guess which two I wrote pretty easily) but I'm still working on other projects.

Anyway, this is what I got, and I love them all:

Observations (the Scene From the Past Remix) (100 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (2011)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Raven (X Men), Charles Xavier
Summary:

Raven's first few weeks at the mansion.

(In the original, Raven reflected on Alex's first few days at the mansion, and how he reminded her of her younger self. I love that the remixer went with Charles's POV. I think it works perfectly.)

Hold On To Me (Like a Shadow or a Friend Remix) (675 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (2011)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Alex/Darwin
Summary:

Darwin's alive, and it's a reality that Alex can't let go of.

(!!!!! MY BOYS. Darwin comes back and Alex is all guilt-stricken and still smitten. Which is just how I like him. *g*)

Purple Lace (Remix of "Even After All These Years") (1306 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Harry Potter - Fandom
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Minerva McGonagall/Alastor Moody
Summary:

After Alastor Moody invites Minerva McGonagall to "take inventory," he takes one of his own.

(The original is one of my favorite HP fics, and I love what the remixer did with Moody's POV: he's wary and wry and he understands Minerva so well. *sigh* Oh, Alastor. Yes, it appears I still have a thing for him.)

the way that light attaches to a girl (maybe this year remix) (1071 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Glee
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Santana Lopez/Brittany S. Pierce
Summary:

The girl she loves is crumbling like a sandcastle and Brittany can't find the words to say that she'll be the waves washing over Santana as long as she needs.

(In the original, Santana reacts to her grandmother kicking her out. In the remix, Brittany tries to pick up the pieces. I love the way the remixer wrote Brittany's POV. She's no genius, but she understands Santana, which is no easy thing sometimes. The imagery is also lovely.)

30 Days of Awesome Ladies

Previous days )

Day Twenty-Nine: A female-centric fic rec:

Going to go with this one, since I just read it and loved it: The Material Properties of Memory by [livejournal.com profile] ignipes. X-Men: First Class, gen, focused on Emma Frost, with appearances by Mystique, Erik, and Charles. This is a brilliant, beautifully written look at Emma. This Emma is complex and introspective, deceptive, but not without compassion.

And on a lighter note, I also recommend the Emma-centric The Emperor's New Clothes, which is about Erik's spectacularly bad costume choices. It's very funny.

The rest of the days )
thistlerose: (Default)
Day 6

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.

Actually, I was pretty sure I would like all of these because I like the authors a lot. They're just very much not my kinks, and I'd probably have skipped over them if they'd been written by other people. But they weren't, so I didn't, and I'm very, very glad. :)

These are all Star Trek: AOS

Rich, Not Gaudy by [livejournal.com profile] janice_lester
Kirk/McCoy | NC-17 | 3,700 words | Bones has a secret hobby, and Jim's beginning to think it might be awesome if Bones would, you know, admit it so they could have some fun with the whole concept... | Contains cross-dressing

In Perfect Trust by [livejournal.com profile] mijan
Kirk/McCoy | NC-17 | 22k | "Everything feels just... it's like I'm itching for something that I can't quite scratch. So I wanted something that could… snap me out of that. Feel like I'm trying something new and dangerous."
It certainly wasn't how Leonard McCoy had ever hoped to discover Jim's more unusual sexual interests, but now that he knew, he wasn't going to let the opportunity slip for either of them... if Jim trusted him enough. | Contains BDSM, needleplay, sounding. Also contains artwork that is gorgeous, but very much not work-safe

These Inconvenient Fireworks by [livejournal.com profile] affectingly
Kirk/McCoy | NC-17 | 16.5k | Jim finds that giving Bones what he wants is exactly what they both need. | Contains: daddy kink, spanking ... and possibly a few other things that I can't remember.

Bring Your Jukebox Money by [livejournal.com profile] rubynye
Kirk/Gaila/McCoy | NC-17 | Jim found them in bed together like an unwrapped present, fully assembled and lubed and powered up, and he doesn't see any reason he can't have them both on this rainy afternoon. | Contains a threesome*

* But seriously, Ruby has written lots and lots of gorgeous threesome stories. If I were not utterly crap at remembering titles, I would rec more of her stuff.

_____

So, I'm writing this m/m fic that involves cross-dressing (though really, it's more about trust and kink acceptance and being comfortable than it is about anything else) and it occurred to me that I've never encountered the f/f or f/m equivalent - that is to say, a story in which a woman dresses only in men's underwear (my fic involves underwear) and it really turns her partner on. I feel like I should remedy that. I'm just trying to settle on a pairing. Keith/Watts? (She already wears boxers in canon.) Willow/Kennedy? Faith/Robin? Brittany/Santana? Gaila/someone? Gaila walking around topless in Sulu's silk boxers?
thistlerose: (flowers)
Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

The last three fics I pimped all had male protagonists. So here are some female-centric recs.

Two Brittany/Santana pics (Glee) by [livejournal.com profile] ileliberte. The first one is semi work-safe (they're wearing bikinis and kissing, but nothing's showing). The second one is work-safe. So pretty. So sweet. And I love the way the artist captured Santana's happy but slightly mischievous expression.

To Be Alone With You (Star Trek: TOS | McCoy/Uhura | teen+) by [livejournal.com profile] malleablyfic. This is the story that got me into McCoy/Uhura. It's mostly set during the movies, and they're so tender and irascible and adorable together.

You can't put back a petal when it falls from a flower (Grey's Anatomy | Meredith/Cristina | teen) by [livejournal.com profile] zvi_likes_tv. My affection for this show lasted for about three seasons, but my favorite thing about it was Meredith and Cristina's friendship. Hell, I still privately hope they dump their men and hook up. Cristina is Meredith's person and vice versa, and this fic captures them - and Izzie - beautifully.

And No Birds Sing (Westmark Trilogy | Zara & Florian | teen) by [livejournal.com profile] rainbowjehan. We don't learn a lot about Zara in Lloyd Alexander's Westmark Trilogy, except that she's very fierce and in love with Florian and has russet hair. This fic fleshes her out nicely. We get a lot of insight into her character as she saves Florian after he's been wounded.
thistlerose: (BtVS: Scoobies)
Eeee, I love all my remixes! I mean the ones that were written for me. They are:

Option #2
Star Trek: AOS | Kirk/McCoy | teen | This is Bones trying to keep Jim from having a nervous breakdown after he learns he's being given the Enterprise. It's such a sweet moment. Bones is so attuned to Jim, but he can still rib him a little. ♥

Orpheus in the Underground (Dark Minuet)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer | Xander, Faith | teen | Xander and Faith deal with the aftermath of Angel's battle with Wolfram and Hart. Loved Xander's voice here, and his dialog with Faith. ♥

Man's Best Friend (The Dog Days Are Here Again Remix)
Battlestar Galactica Reboot | Gaeta, Jake | general audiences | Jake leaves Romo Lampkin for Felix Gaeta. From Jake's POV. Adorable. ♥

Out With the Old (the Made for TV Prophetic Remix)
BtVS/Supernatural crossover | Dean/Buffy, Sam, Dawn | teen | This one made me laugh out loud. It's very tongue-in-cheek. Younger sibling solidarity! ♥

Read! Leave comments for the authors!

Also, the offer still stands. If you can guess at least one of the three I wrote, I'll write you a ficlet. (Comments screened.)
thistlerose: (honey/sweet)
I'm having a pretty good day. Didn't start out that way, but it's gotten progressively better. My library display is being appreciated. The CD player in my car came back to life. I finally found the Saint Cloud Bakery, despite Google Map's best efforts to thwart me. (Holy shit, Google Maps. It wasn't anywhere near where you said it was! I only found it at all because I had a sudden hunch.) Because it was my first time there, they gave me a free fresh-out-of-the-oven chocolate chip cookie, and then I bought some date-filled cookies and a miniature strawberry-rhubarb pie.

Then I came home and read (We Go Together) Like Ion Storms and Transporter Malfunctions by [livejournal.com profile] nix_this (AOS | Scotty/Kirk | Adult/NC-17 | 7,500 words). I don't actively ship Scotty/Kirk, but I read it when it crosses my path, and I have to say ... if I could imagine the perfect Scotty/Kirk story, it would go something like this. Scotty is a BAMF, and innovative, and funny, and sweet, and Kirk knows it. *happy sigh*
thistlerose: (seasonal: winter)
Re. yesterday's adventure: thank you for all your kind words. I don't think I'm going to get to reply to them individually, but I want you to know that they're appreciated. Still in a state of WTF, and I keep thinking I should have been able to regain control of the car, even though people keep telling me no, when you hit black ice or whatever it was, that's it.

Could've been worse. :(

In any case, not everything is horrible. I sold a dinosaur cell phone charm the other day, which I need to mail this afternoon.

People seem to like my WNW story. (And if you've been following this journal for the past couple of weeks, you should have noooooo trouble guessing which one I wrote.)

People also wrote lovely things for me!

A lovely anonymous person wrote Beautiful Side of Somewhere for WNW. It's a closer look at Guinan and Ro Laren during the TNG episode "Rascals." It's a sweet look at their friendship.

I got some goodies in my [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, including a story about Worf and Jadzia lighting a menorah (eeeee! I'd totally forgotten about Worf's adoptive parents); a sweet ficlet about Debera and Morath of Pern; TOS!Spock/Bones kisses; Kirk and McCoy visiting the Arts & Crafts planet and flying a kite; and some Sven/Romelle bittersweetness.

And [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock wrote me Shamash, an absolutely lovely story about Amanda lighting Hanukkah candles with Spock - who later shares the tradition with Nyota. *sigh*

I want to highlight two more fics, which were not written for me, but made an impression. They're for "Glee," which I don't generally read because I have such meh feelings about the show itself.

My Judaism by Zephyrprince takes a look at the Jewish backgrounds of Tina, Puck, and Rachel. It's pretty short, but I think it treats the characters' backgrounds with more respect than the show ever did.

So You Think You Can't Dance by [livejournal.com profile] janice_lester focuses on Artie, who has more options than the writers of the show seem aware of.

_____

Lastly...

Och, aye. Start thinking about prompts. Gen, het, slash, all ratings, all genres, so long as the focus is Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott. Who deserves more love.

(Being held on Burns Night - January 25th - in honor of one of Scotland's other famous sons.)

Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] silveronthetree for the banners. Two more behind the cut. )
thistlerose: (seasonal: winter)
I wrote two stories for Yuletide this year. If you can guess either one of them before the reveal on Saturday, I'll write you a ficlet.

I have a few recs, all of which have probably been recommended elsewhere. Whatever. They're awesome. Indiana Jones, American Idiot, The Secret of NIMH, The Dragonriders of Pern, A Separate Peace, The Bourne Trilogy, The Little Mermaid, The Lymond Chronicles, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine )

And there's still so much I want to read. Not just Yuletide, but there are still a couple of Big Bang stories on my to-read list. I think once my WNW story is done - and it's finally coming together! - I'm going to want to kick back and do some reading instead of writing. I say that every year, but this time... We'll see. :)
thistlerose: (seasonal: autumn)
  • Applied to a job in South Carolina. Actually, it looks like it could be a good position for me: it's at a university (in Columbia, if anyone is curious) and it is mostly reference. I love reference. Here's hoping the search committee thinks it would be a good position for me too. This job hunt is so discouraging. I don't think I got the job at UW-BC. It's been three weeks. They would have said something by now. :( I'm never going to get a job. I'm never going to have health insurance. I'm never going to have babies. I'm never going to move out of my mom's house or find a man. My cats are going to eat me.

  • Still kind of stuck on the Sam Kirk Story too. Thinking of shelving it for a while and focusing on other projects, like the Spock/Uhura story that's due in 10 days. Or my [livejournal.com profile] help_pakistan story, when my person sends me a prompt. :)

  • On a more cheerful note, now that it's autumn, we have some very nice, locally grown apples.

  • And, while going through an old photo album, I found a picture of me and my BFF from my fourth birthday party. *g* I think that's my oldest picture of us.

  • I need to get a thing to wrap my ears in when I go biking. It's too windy here on the prairie, and my ears really hurt. Needs to be something fairly thin, though, since it has to fit under my helmet and I don't want to sweat more than I do already.

  • Okay, and three recs. Star Trek AOS, Kirk/McCoy.

If You're Into It by [livejournal.com profile] canis_takahari. NC-17. Five things Jim didn’t know about Bones (and one thing he already did). Hilarious and very hot. I love this look at Bones: he's very quirky. Also, they have sex in a library. Sold!

Think of England by [personal profile] lindermere. NC-17. When Kirk goes AWOL, McCoy is dispatched to bring him back using his unique talents (yes, those ones). Plotty and very sexy. The dialog here is wonderful, and so revealing in terms of characterization.

Snow Country by [livejournal.com profile] ayalesca. PG-13. Jim dies and arrives in the afterlife to find that "eternity" is a single memory that he must choose from his lifetime. He also meets McCoy -- who died before the first mission ended, and who won't tell Jim why he hasn't been able to move into the afterlife ... I read this one this morning. I've been thinking about it all afternoon, and periodically tearing up. Yeah. It's heart-wrenching, but in that good way.
  • thistlerose: (coffee)
After wibbling yesterday, I actually did sit down and rewrite the second sex scene in The Next Time You Say Forever. (And updated the chapter.) At present, I'm quite satisfied. More than I was before, and I only left it so long because I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. I think I finally did: they're tired and still kind of shaken up. So, the new version takes that into account. It's also a bit more descriptive, a bit longer (to the tune of 500 words) and a tiny bit more banter-y. So. Yay.

I also wrote about 150 words of my Mirrim story. *g* She's such a brat, and that's one of the reasons I love her. She's going to get into so much trouble. And I don't think T'gellan's going to bail her out his time. Well, she's not going to let him. I honestly do not know where this is going, but sometimes that's the way that works.

    _____

I have recs too! From Yuletide. The treats are up, and OMG! I got two adorable "Order of the Stick" ficlets, both about Daigo! Whom I've adored (along with Kazumi) ever since he realized that just having a name increased his chance of survival. In Background Characters' Guide to Survival he gives a pep talk to some NPCs. In Rhymes With "Can-o-Data" he and Kazumi give some musical advice to Elan. They're both hilarious and could seriously be inserted seamlessly into the comic.

    _____

*g* The toast just popped and my cat jumped a whole foot in the air. Oh, Will.
    thistlerose: (seasonal)
    Merry Christmas!

My goodness, my neighborhood is so deserted! There've been maybe three cars going by since I got up at 8:30 this morning, and there are no lights in any of the windows across the street. And it's so quiet! I've never been alone on Christmas before, and it's kind of spooky and cool. (Seriously. When I was in Japan six years ago, I spent Christmas at this youth hostel somewhere in northern Nagano, and the hostess made me a cake. Like, an actual cake because it was Christmas and I was alone and by that point I'd given up trying to explain that not all Americans celebrate the holiday. It was a lovely, lovely thing for her to do. ♥ )

    Anyway.

This year some lovely, lovely person wrote Eyes Whirling Bright for my for Yuletide! It's Pernfic and it's about Moreta, my favorite gold rider! It's about her early days at Fort Weyr and it's full of sweet, touching moments between rider and dragon and I love it to pieces.

And I'm kind of excited that Yuletide Madness isn't open for business yet, because it means I have more goodies to look forward to later in the day.

Wow, it's nearly noon and I'm still in my pajamas. I think I'm going to heat up some of the leftover Chinese food, get back into bed, and watch "A Christmas Story" on DVD. I'm feeling supremely lazy and it's not like there's anything to do, what with all the people in my neighborhood having vanished. I suppose most of them have gone to church and to relatives' houses, since I think many of them are students. Hmm.

Anyway, I hope you're all having a very lovely holiday!!
    thistlerose: (books)
I'm at the library writing a paper. I've never sat in these little love seats with the swivelly tables before! They're kind of comfy. And I can put my feet up on the little footstool! So awesome. I love the library. I'm writing a paper on how to find information about John Adams. In case, you know, anyone's as obsessive about our second president as I'm becoming.

More required reading for AOS Kirk/McCoy Enthusiasts:

    Asymmetry by [livejournal.com profile] canis_takahari.
    Rated R
Summary: Leonard McCoy has already been through the dorm room politics, the awkward drunken nights, the pain and fear and grief; he didn’t expect to have to start his life over again, but Jim Kirk is making sure he does it right this time.
Sounds typical, yeah? It is so very not typical. (And when I say that I don't mean to imply that there's a shortage of amazing fics being written for this fic, because there so is not.) This is just beautifully written and poignant and funny and ... oh, guys. Also, this hits my poetry kink like a hammer on a nail.

Cowboys Lost at Sea by [livejournal.com profile] ayalesca.
Rated NC-17, though I think that rating implies that it's all about the porn and it's really, really not.
Summary: Jim and McCoy are trapped, together and alone, in a strange world made up of their memories and desires. In a world where almost anything they want comes into existence, there is no hiding from their desires, each other, or themselves.
I don't really know what to say about this one, except that it's gorgeous and powerful and interesting and heartbreaking (but in that good way). It's just an amazingly well-told, well-constructed story, and it took my breath away.

Welcome, Great Pumpkin! Alas, I haven't had time to search out a sincere pumpkin patch this year. But I hope you have a happy Halloween. :)

In lieu of candy, have some recs! Uh, they're all ST: Reboot, and I think ... yup, they're almost all Kirk/McCoy, though some are also Spock/Uhura and there's one two gen. Read more... )
    thistlerose: (librarians)
Best thing I've heard today: "Reference librarians know everything. That's why they were put on this earth. Also, they're nice."

    #^_^#

I'm just so glad I happened to know the answer to her question!

Also, apparently I'm cool even though I didn't not cheer for the Yankees.

Okay, back to homework and librarianing. When I'd so much rather be brainstorming this story. *le sigh*

I've downloaded the first episode of the 2nd season of "The Big Bang Theory" for tonight.

12,300 words. And climbing. O_o At least Chapter Three (of Six) is done. I feel like I'm over the hump. Now I just need to write about the thrilling heroics and the climax. And I suppose there ought to be one more sex scene. That isn't fraught with aaaangst.

And here are pictures of Sophie with Jean-Luc the tribble. )

I think I shall make some tea and get caught up on my New Yorkers.

    _____

ETA: Insta!rec: To Be Alone With You by [livejournal.com profile] malleablyfic. TOS McCoy and Uhura (and McCoy/Uhura) over the years. The author gives it an R rating, but I think it's more PG-13. Knowledge of the movies (particularly I and VI) is helpful. That said, wow. This is lovely. Never considered this ship before, but the author makes it work.
    thistlerose: (memory)
Making pasta, waiting for Torchwood to download, wondering what I'm going to do at ALA tomorrow (there's so much going on omg!) *wrings hands* Got a little bit of work done on my new ST story (the epic angsty one with the happy ending). I think I know what I'm going to wear tomorrow.

Here's a quick Star Trek: Reboot rec: the Dear Daddy series by [livejournal.com profile] jessofthebugs. It has nine parts so far, and I've no idea how much longer it's going to get, but it's seriously worth checking out, especially if you're 1) a Kirk/McCoy shipper; and 2) enjoy epistolary stories. As the title implies, it's largely about Joanna McCoy's correspondences with her dad. And her correspondences with a young Vulcan boy whom she befriends, and with Kirk whom she now has wrapped around her little finger. It's really darling without being saccharine. It has Sulu/Chekov. Savas the young Vulcan is cuter than cute. The last bit was kind of an awesome ensemble piece featuring major and minor characters from the Reboot as well as TOS.

I know I've said this before, but I just love the way writers in this fandom - particularly Kirk/McCoy fans, which only makes sense - have lifted the only semi-canon Joanna from obscurity and turned her into this interesting, often vital character. It's just so nice seeing fans - particularly slash fans - writing about girls and why their adventures and opinions are so important.

Speaking of lifting female characters from obscurity and making them AWESOME, here's a story about Winona Kirk, which I really, really liked: Earth Is Like the Midwest of the Federation Planets by [livejournal.com profile] builtofsorrow. It's been a few weeks since I read it, so all I really remember is that it kind of ripped my heart out - but in that good way! And Winona's fabulous and empathetic while still being a flawed character.
