For about $100 more a month, I could have gotten a much larger apartment. But I like the Cat Cave. It's...cozy. And how many landlords have nice parents who'll fix your windows and volunteer to check in on your cats when you're away?

Anyway, [livejournal.com profile] musesfool did a poll like this, and it got me curious.

I ought to have a Gundam Wing icon. Occasionally, Relena occupies my "princess" slot. Hmm.

So, if you're a fan of Buffy and Batman (and Buffy/Batman) you really ought to be reading Gotham Nights by [livejournal.com profile] r_becca. It's funny, it's charming, and it comes in bat bite-sized portions - like a yummy snack. It's set after "Chosen" but - so far - contains no spoilers for "The Dark Knight." I recommend it.

How is it that, when I have to dress for work, I feel like I have so few clothes - and yet, when it's time for me to pack things up, I find I have an avalanche of shirts in all shapes and colors?? I think I'm going to be giving most of them to good will because 1) I'm just not going to have the closet space or the dresser space and 2) some of them really don't fit me anymore. Pfft. It's my stupid boobs. Thanks to pilates, my butt and waist have gotten smaller. Nothing seems to shrink my boobs. afdakjfhakdjhf

I wish I could write. I thought I might, since I can't spend the entire day packing and angsting, but the words aren't coming. I'm supposed to be writing this Harry/Ginny story, and then I've been toying with this idea for a BSG story all about Helo and Athena and what makes a person a person, only I've learned that a ship's captain isn't actually authorized to perform weddings, so Lee's feels are rather irrelevant, and I've got this neat idea for an original story, but I have allergies, and there are clothes all over my floor, and why do I have so many coffee mugs and candles and stuffed animals and books OMG WHY DID I BUY ALL THESE BOOKS?

So, in lieu of fic, I'm going to do this fandom meme I copied from [livejournal.com profile] coffee_n_cocoa: Cut for your convenience. )

So I was adding some new interests to my LJ profile and found myself feeling defensive every time I typed a female name, thinking, basically, FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME, because I felt as if someone somewhere was going to be criticizing my love for them.

So, anyway, then I made a list of women who make me want to say FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME. They are far from the only women who are awesome, or the only women people need to be told to step off of, but they are the top ten I feel that way about, right now, off the top of my head.

If you want to argue with me about the awesomeness of any of these women, I am afraid I will simply be referring you to the subject line. THAT IS ALL.

Happy Purim!

It being the first full day of spring, naturally, it's snowing! A lot. Grrr, Minnesota. *shakes fist* And I'd just washed my car on Wednesday. It was so shiny and clean, someone actually asked me if it was new.

[livejournal.com profile] fannish5 asks: What are the five best uses of religion/religious beliefs in canon?

And it occurs to me that most of my favorite fandoms (Buffy, Harry Potter, Gundam Wing, Voltron) don't really touch on religion, except in passing. (I think there was some minor wank years ago when someone tried to ascribe a religion to Voltron. He has - if I recall correctly, it really has been years - a big cross on his chest, but someone argued that the laser on his forehead looked like a bindi. But I digress!)

2. What object would you turn into a horcrux, if the need arose?

One of those black boxes they use in airplanes

3. What ride would you like to see made at the new HP park that will be opening next year?

Sirius Black

4. What 3 characters would you be willing to be go on a roadtrip with?

Hermione, Ginny, and Tonks.

5. You're given an invisibilty cloak for one week, what do you do with it?

On the other hand, one of the things I like about atheism is the comparative lack of organization. I just want to be left alone. Oh, the Sheltie Rescue group has a booth, apparently. (Shelties!) And I'd like to be supportive of the homosexual community. So, maybe I'll go. (Shelties! Seriously, shelties.)

* [livejournal.com profile] hp_fridayfive:

1. What is your favorite Book 7 theory?

ONE BIG HAPPY WEASLEY FAMILY. Because it would make me happy, and the ensuing wank would be made of diamonds.

2. Which movie soundtrack do you like best and why?

Er. I have a few tracks from PoA. I don't think I've heard any of them all the way through. PoA by default, I guess.

3. How long do you plan to spend reading DH?

Until I finish it, however long that takes.

4. If you could have any character for a LiveJournal friend, who would it be?

Ginny. She seems like a fun, loyal person.

5. Have you ever had a teacher/professor that reminded you of a Hogwarts professor? How?

Well, Dr. Ferguson made students cry on a regular basis...though he wasn't sadistic so much as BATSHIT CRAZY. Mr. Walsh reminds me of Lupin, just a little. A sweet guy, but he had command of the class - even when he was teaching a subject about which he didn't know much. I adored him.

[livejournal.com profile] r_becca and I are doing [livejournal.com profile] summer_of_giles and more of you should sign up because more Giles = YAY! Crossovers are perfectly fine, so now I have no excuses not to hook up Giles and Sarah Jane Smith. I only just remembered that Tony Head was in "School Reunion." I've got to sneak that in there somehow. :)

I really like crossovers. They're like puzzles. How does this canon fit with that canon? If you're crossing Buffyverse with Potterverse, how do you solve the werewolf problem? If you're crossing Buffyverse with Supernaturalverse, how do you solve the vampire problem? What if, as in the case of my fic, one of the characters looks remarkably like an alien the other character helped defeat? It's like a game. It's fun.

It also serves to expand your characters' worlds because, let's face it, there are only so many variations on interesting, plausible scenarios. (In my opinion, anyway. Each new author brings her own perspective, but come on. How many first time fics can you really stand reading?)

Anyhow.

I'm nearly done with season two of "Alias." After that...I don't know. Already, I can feel it slipping. Why can't they just catch Sloane and live happily ever after? I'm totally not making up a ficlet in my head. I'm not. Okay, I am. But it doesn't involve Sydney seeking out an extremely aged Indiana Jones for Rimbaldi info. Really, it doens't.

For the past two days, for breakfast I've had a banana and two caramel rice crackers smeared with peanut butter. It's been heavenly. No, I can't explain it.

Posted a fic yesterday. Snape-centric, of all things. Um, involving Smurfs. Yes, really: A Sure Cure for the Blues.

Finished Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone last night. It's been about four years since I last read it in its entirety. It's really not that well written. I've read much, much worse, but it's really full of cliches and trite phrasing. However, Rowling's really wonderfully inventive, and she writes kids so well.

Things that caught my attention this time around:

- At one point, Harry wonders if Snape can read his mind. HEE.
- Dean Thomas isn't mentioned at all until rather late in the book. For a few chapters, the only indication that he exists is the fact that there are five beds in the first year boys' dorm. I know from Rowling's site that he was originally meant to be more important. Huh.
- Hermione hugging Parvati at the Quidditch match was cute. And a little sad, considering their mutual coldness later on.
- Ron is wonderful. I'd forgotten how cool he was early in the series. Going alone to help Hagrid look after Norbert, kicking ass at chess, letting himself be wounded so Harry and Hermione can get to the Stone.
- Hagrid isn't as funny as I used to think he was. I guess I can't get his behavior in OotP and HBP out of my mind. I don't even remember what he did in HBP, just that he annoyed me.
- I wish we'd seen more of Quirrell. He's barely a character.
- I wish we'd seen Snape at the end of the book. He kind of disappears. I wonder what he thought of Harry's recovery of the Stone. I'm sure whatever good feelings he might have had were trampled by Gryffindor's triumph over Slytherin.
- Not really seeing the pro-Gryffindor bias yet. In McGonagall, sure, but that's understandable. The Trio and Neville deserved those points at the end. And as far as we know, Draco received no punishment for swiping Neville's Remembrall. We know that the Weasleys have served detentions.
- Neville is made of win.

Right. So, while everyone else was watching the new episode of Doctor Who (which I've downloaded for tomorrow) I was finishing S4 of Buffy. Some impressions. )

I like my new fandom, even though it isn't so shiny and new anymore. I feel like I'm late to the party, but there are still cookies available. The sheer amount of canon intimidated me, at first. Now I find it kind of exciting. I wonder about these characters, what they were like before the series, what they're going to do afterward. Mmm, shiny new fandom.

I learned the other day that my left foot is turned in slightly. I had no idea, but I guess that would account for the pain I get sometimes. Huh.

Anyway, it's Friday! I think Friday is my favorite day, even though I don't get to sleep in. I go to work, so I feel as if I've accomplished something. Then I go home and the entire weekend sprawls before me. Too chipper for before 9am?

For [livejournal.com profile] hp_fridayfive:

1. Which character evolution has been your favorite to read, and why?

Neville. Despite all he's been through - losing his parents, being degraded by his family, being bullied by Snape and Draco - he's become a brave, compassionate young man. And he hasn't had Harry's support network.

2. When Harry was originally sorted, the Sorting Hat told him he'd make a good Slytherin. How do you think Snape would have treated Harry had he been sorted into his own house?

I don't think Snape would have been able to resist gloating over the fact that James's son wound up in his house, and that would not have endeared him to Harry one bit.

3. Do you give any creedence to the "McGonagall is a spy" theory? Why or why not?

No, I don't. Spy for whom? The Ministry? Give me a break.

4. Which character do you get a sense is JK Rowling's favorite? Why?

Hasn't she stated that Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Ginny, Lupin, and Luna are her favorites?

5. We all know that the last word of Book 7 is "scar." Write what you'd love to see as the last sentence, and make sure to include "scar" as the final word!

And then Harry, Ginny, Luna, and Neville all made out in the backseat of the Weasleys' car.

For [livejournal.com profile] fannish5

My top five mentors/teachers:

1. Yoda. But only in the original Star Wars trilogy.
2. Dallben from The Prydain Chronicles. How can you not love a guy who can only meditate with his eyes closed and his head resting on his folded arms?
3. Rupert Giles
4. Jack Falstaff. I guess he's a mentor. Sort of.
5. Miranda Bailey from Grey's Anatomy. She pwns all.

Honorable Mention:

6. Remus Lupin
7. Minerva McGonagall
8. The Doctor
9. Q, from Star Trek: TNG. Thinning the line between mentor and tormentor.
10. Gandalf
11. Sally Po, from Gundam Wing. I think you can argue that she's a mentor to Wufei and Noin.
12. Mary Poppins
13. Sybilla Crawford from The Lymond Chronicles. Richard and Francis's mummy pwns.
14. Jed Bartlet, The West Wing
15. Morgan Freeman. I can't think of a specific role, but he's so cool. I bet he's played a kick-ass mentor/teacher in his day.

I tend not to love authority figures. But I'll keep all of the above.

Thanks for helping me sort out my tags yesterday. I'm in the process of organizing my stories by year, fandom, and - in some cases - ship (or lack thereof) and main character. I have stuff from 2000. I feel old. I have a Catcher in the Rye story from 1995/4. But that was written for school, so I'm not sure it counts. But it's there. (Under the fic2000 tag, because I didn't want it to be all alone.)

Oh my god, I've written a lot. Except that, since about 2003, nearly all my stories have been very short.

[livejournal.com profile] hp_fridayfive:

1. How do you feel about Dumbledore's avoidance of Harry in OotP?

He gave his reasons, but I still think his actions were cold, irresponsible, and ultimately disastrous.

2. Name a favorite crackpot Potter theory.

Favorite as in something I wish would happen, or favorite as in the thing I like to laugh at most? I'll go with the latter. Snape is the true woobie hero of the books, and before the end, everyone will realize how very misunderstood he is and repent and love him evermore. Or something.

3. Do you think Sirius (consciously or not) mistaking Harry for James actually caused more harm than good?

Well, I'm not convinced that he did mistake Harry for his father, so I can't answer that question. I think that the sight of Harry made him feel James's loss more keenly, but we only have Molly and Hermione insisting that Sirius occasionally mistakes Harry for James, and they're not always right.

4. Tonks: Love her, hate her, or somewhere in-between?

Like her. I think she has a lot of potential that, unfortunately, was squandered in HBP. But I enjoy writing about her, and reading good fan fiction about her.

5. What Hogwarts house would you definitely NOT belong in?

Slytherin. I'm not very ambitious, not very crafty, and I'm not interested in blood purity or tradition. Besides, except for Slughorn maybe, I don't think I'd get along with anyone connected with that house.

Don't you just love the first rainfall of the year? Okay, well, I do. Not icy, freezing rain, but real rain that washes away that last clumps of dirty snow. There's something so refreshing about it, like having a good cry after a sad book or movie.

Not that it's raining right now. It was, briefly, as I was driving along the river to work, and I started thinking about how much I like ferocious rainstorms in the spring and summer. Provided I don't have to drive in them.

I'm seeing Camelot tomorrow, with Michael York. Then Sunday I'm seeing a reinterpretation of Mozart's Don Giovanni. Should be interesting. So much culture in one weekend! My goodness.

1. Pick your favourite subject back at school - what do you suppose is its magical subject counterpart?

I'm going to assume that school is high school. My favorite subject was English. I don't know. I don't recall any literature classes at Hogwarts. Which peeves me, suddenly. Perhaps Muggle Studies would be the equivalent, since you can't study Muggles without touching on literature.

2. Would you rather be a Pure-blood or a Half-blood? Why?

I'd rather be a Weasley. But since that's not the question... Half-blood, I guess. Hybrids tend to be stronger, and I'd be a part of two worlds, rather than just one. Really, though, it doesn't matter. Your blood doesn't make you a better or worse person.

3. What job would you ideally have in the wizarding world?

Librarian at Hogwarts. I think it would be fun. I could live in the castle, amid all those interesting books.

4. Given the opportunity, would you ever use a love potion?

No. I don't see the point. For one thing, it's illegal. For another, I'd know he doesn't really love me.

5. Have you ever named a pet/child/inanimate object after a Potter character?

I have a plush doggy (I think he's a bull terrier) named Footpad, a plush wolf named Moony, and a plush lab named Padfoot. They're around here somewhere.
thistlerose: (determined)
I posted my Remus/Jenny C fic finally: Weighed Down With Good Intentions. It's the longest, plottiest fic I've written in quite some time and I like it. I want to cross-post it, but I'm not sure where it belongs.

The Firefly meme, copied from [livejournal.com profile] musesfool:

Number of times you’ve seen the whole series (to your best estimate)

4 or 5. Probably 5.

Number of times you’ve seen the movie

5 or 6, I guess.

Favorite character (and why, if you want)

For shame if you don't know by now! I love everyone, but Kaylee most of all. She's in traditionally male profession and she's awesome at it, while there's nothing unfeminine about her. Because she likes sex and isn't afraid to say it, but wants romance too. Because when she chooses a dress, it's the ugliest, pinkest, frilliest confection imagineable. Because she knows people aren't better than her just because they're wealthier. Because she's sweet and cheerful, but doesn't hurt my teeth.

Least favorite character (and why, if you want)

Inara. Joss seemed a little too taken with her, and it turned me off. Not that I don't like her. I just don't adore her the way I do pretty much everyone else. I didn't always like River as much as I do now. Some of the things she said reminded me of the emo poetry my classmates used to write in high school.

Favorite episode (and why, if you want)

I keep coming back to "Heart of Gold," mostly for the Mal/Nandi interaction. It's not that I'm wild about the short-lived ship (though I like Nandi). Mal has been so guarded for much of the series; it's interesting seeing him just take to a person. Plus the Wash/Zoe baby conversation makes me all achy.

Least favorite episode (and why, if you want)

Not really sure. Maybe "The Train Job."

Favorite quote

"To hell with this. I'm gonna live." There are cleverer lines, to be sure. But that one is so well-placed and so funny right at the tensest moment in the movie... Something breaks in me every time I hear it. I love it. Oh, Kaylee.

Favorite scene

Don't make me choose. Oh, fine. I'm very fond of the interrogation scene in "Bushwacked." There are bad things happening, but everyone is so funny and so in character. I'm starting to think I like it when people are funny in dire situations.

Your opinion of the movie: love it, shove it, or mixed feelings

Love it. Not as much as the series, of course, but what can you do?

Favorite canon pairing

Zoe/Wash

Favorite non-canon pairing

Mal/River

In brief, what got you hooked?

All of you guys, quoting lines at me and flashing your pretty icons. I think I knew from the moment I saw Wash with his dinosaurs that I was going to enjoy this series.

Your favorite theory on Book’s background

He's a retired Operative.

Your favorite theory on Inara’s reasons for leaving Sihnon

I never really thought about it, to be honest. I always supposed it was a whim, a sudden strong desire to see more of the galaxy.

Will Mal and Inara ever get together?

I think they should. They need to work out all their UST. But I don't think they'll stay together - or should.

Will Simon and Kaylee stay together?

I love the ship, but instinct is telling me no. Still, whatever happens, I think they'll have fun and part as friends. She's changed him for the better and he'll keep changing. It's really too early in the relationship to tell.

Will River stay (or get) on the road to mental health?

She'll reach a point, I hope, where she can function on her own socially, though she'll probably prefer a select few for company. She'll never be normal. I mean, they took out her whatever.

Favorite Firefly fanfic

Haven't read enough to have one.

Is Firefly your main fandom now?

It never was.

What are your top 2 other fandoms?

Harry Potter still, and possibly Buffy now.
thistlerose: (Kaylee)
Whee, it's Friday, and I'm having kind of an easy day.

HP Friday Five:

1. If you could pick one director (living or dead) to direct a Potter film, who would it be and which film would they make?

Joss Whedon for OotP. He's good at senseless death scenes, so I'd trust him with Sirius. He's also good with young women, so I'd trust him with the development of Ginny and Hermione, and the introduction of Luna (who is a bit Tara-like) and Tonks. Like Cuaron, he occasionally brings the gay, so there'd be some hope for Sirius/Remus hints.

2. How old were you when you first got into Harry Potter?

About a month shy of twenty. That was when I first read Sorcerer's Stone. I didn't become involved in fandom until I was 23.

3. Choose another fandom and sort the main characters into Hogwarts houses.

I'll do Firefly, since I mentioned Joss.

Mal and Zoe for Gryffindor. Kaylee and Wash for Hufflepuff. The Tams and Shepherd Book for Ravenclaw. I waffled on Book because we really don't know much about him. But I think he's an intellectual. He has faith, but it's not blind faith. I'm putting Inara in Slytherin because she's deeply concerned with tradition and because she's ambitious, as is Jayne. But I don't think Jayne cares for tradition or blood purity, so maybe he doesn't belong in Slytherin. But I don't know where else to put him. He's brave, but it's not his salient characteristic.

4. What's your favorite Gryffindor moment in the series?

It's a tie between Neville standing up to the Trio in PS/SS and Ron and Hermione standing up to Sirius in PoA.

5. Do you foresee Harry reuniting with Sirius, his parents, and Dumbledore in Book 7 in some way?

Uh, if he dies. I don't see how else they'll be reuinted. He might see them in a Pensieve or the Mirror of Erised.

Damn. My laundry is still in the dryer and I really need to go to sleep.

I claimed a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] tenyearsofbuffy. I've got about a month and a half to write at least 500 words about Faith. Fun. I think I might have her run into Kate and possibly Lorne.

Still no progress on "Weighed Down." And I'm near the climax of the story, so I can't run out of steam.

This weekend, I wrote 2,000+ words of a King's Quest story. I know, I know. Actually, I sort of like the story, though I'm not really sure where it's going. Last night I dreamed that King John (who looked like Claude Rains) was overthrown by Henry IV (Jon Finch, from the BBC series) and all this took place at a somewhat posh hotel. After Henry went back to his castle, John's wife Narcissa and one of her friends (who's name I should know, but I don't) hitched a ride with Jin from "Lost" in a sky blue jeep, so they could get to Henry's side of the kingdom and confront him.

The funny thing is, in the dream, I was thinking, "Oh this is cool but I can't post about in on livejournal because it's too historically accurate."

I'm rereading Francesca Lia Block's "Dangerous Angels" for the fifth or sixth time. I love these books so much. They are absolutely not for everyone (people seem to either really love them or really hate them) but guh. I'm on the fifth one, "Baby Be-Bop," and this story just breaks me into little pieces. All of these stories are so wonderfully sensual. At times, they border on pretentious, but there's a tongue-in-cheek quality that saves them. They make me want to move to LA right now.
