Late last night I decided my McCoy/Uhura WiP wasn't working, so I scrapped my latest draft and started rewriting it completely from his POV. (It had been from hers originally.) It occurred to me that of all the McCoy/Uhura stories I've written - heh, all five, or however many - with one exception they've been from her POV. And maybe the change of perspective will be good. *sigh* Why can't I wriiiiiiite?

30 – Do you have a favorite story you've written? What makes it your favorite? And don't forget to give us a link!

You want me to choose one? I have a tag for my favorite stories, going all the way back to my very first Gundam Wing story, written in 2000. (Wow, I've been in fandom a long time!)

In terms of writing, I think my favorite one is Nobody's Good Son, which is about Geoffrey Plantagenet dealing with the aftermath of Christmas at Chinon with his family. It was also the must fun to research.

In terms of plot, which is something I generally fail at, my favorite is The Next Time You Say Forever, which is about McCoy learning to be a good dad, and Kirk growing up, and the two of them losing each other and finding each other again. It's about Joanna too. She pushed her way into the story and I'm so glad she did, because I adore her. I love it partly because I managed to cram all my favorite themes into 27k.

In terms of characterization ... I don't know. I'm very, very fond of Left Alone to Wander, since I developed Sam Kirk from basically nothing, and I adore him. Writing this story rekindled my love of YA fiction, since that's essentially what it is.

All that is subject to change, of course. Assuming I get my mojo back.

Thank you very much for your time. :)

Hmf. In a fit of panic, I changed my third Yuletide nomination - the one that was still under review. My new nomination had already been approved, so now I can't change it. Oh, well. I'd wanted the 2009 Wonder Woman movie. It's the only WW canon I have access to at the moment, and it wasn't on the ineligible fandoms list. *shrug*

29 – What is your current project or projects?

So many things! I have five stories left to write for those charity auctions. Two Kirk/McCoy, one Kirk/McCoy/Uhura, one McCoy/Uhura, and one genfic about Simon and River Tam. I have plot bunnies for all of them, but I've only started two. *fails*

I have my assignment for [livejournal.com profile] kirk_sulu. I have a plot bunny for that one too, though I haven't started writing it. It's a bit ridiculous, but it amuses me.

I have one sentence of my [livejournal.com profile] havok_darwin exchange story written.

Then there's "You Ain't Nothin But Gone," an X-Men story I'm writing for my own enjoyment. I have a few sentences and some random snippets of dialog. In which everyone is kind of depressed. Alex grapples with his internalized homophobia, which doesn't prevent him from having ghost!sex with Darwin. Sean possibly gets drafted. I don't know what happens to Hank. I guess he sulks. And Charles is bitter about Erik and Raven. And maybe Storm joins the X-Men. IDK. I may be making this thing too complicated.

"Time Ticks Around You" is all about Kirk and McCoy and self-sacrifice. Er, I haven't written very much of it. It's the one with the gunshot wounds.

And then there's Yuletide.

Ack.

I've done a couple of stories based on other people's artwork, and a few of my stories have inspired fan artists (which is just about the most flattering thing ever) but I've never worked in collaboration with an artist or another writer. I've tried a few times, but it just doesn't work. I do not write well with others. :(

Nikki Wood from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Well, considering how little we see of her, it's extensive. I had this whole epic story in my head, of how she became a Slayer. Not that I ever wrote any of it. I wasn't sure I could properly capture the feel of Manhattan in the mid-1970s, and by the time I got to the fandom, enthusiasm for BtVS was waning, at least among my friends. So I just told Nikki's story to myself.

In bed, slumped against a pile of pillows. My desk chair isn't that comfy, and there's really no other place in the house where I can write without distraction. Not that the cats aren't nuisances sometimes, but I can distract them with my laser pointer or squirt them with my water bottle. I can't do that with my housemates' kids. *g*

Fics I wrote in October (and not all of them are X-Men!)

X-Men: First Class

A Day at the Beach
Darwin/Alex | teen | 4,850 words | Alex and Darwin spend a day at the beach.

For Now
Erik & Angel | all ages | 280 words | She came to him to explain, not apologize.

Ghosts
Darwin/Alex, Scott | all ages | 100 words | When he's afraid and alone, Alex closes his eyes and pretends that he isn't.

Haunted
Darwin/Alex | all ages | 100 words | Darwin isn't exactly dead, but he isn't exactly alive either.

Glee

How It's Gonna Be
Burt & Kurt | all ages | 322 words | Burt knows what his six-year-old son will say to his costume suggestion, but he figures he's gotta ask.

I didn't write anywhere near as much as I would have liked. I don't know what's wrong with me these days!

26 – What is the oddest (or funnest) thing you've had to research for a story?

The most fun thing I had to research was all the background info on the Plantagenets for Nobody's Good Son. Probably the most frustrating thing I ever had to research was how to beat someone up the proper way, for A Show of Strength. All the BDSM sites I visited kept telling me how not to hurt somebody badly.

Researching porn is always sort of interesting too. The last time I did, it was to find out if I could actually get three people into a particular position. (The answer is yes, but one of them would keep bumping his head on the other one's tummy.)

25 – Music – Do you listen to music while you write? Do you make playlists to get into a certain "mood" to write your story? Do you need noise in general? Or do you need it completely quiet?

Sometimes. If I'm really deeply immersed in a story, I can listen to instrumental music while I write, and I have a playlist of excerpts from movie soundtracks for those occasions. Usually, though, I need silence. I can sometimes write if I have a steady, low noise in the background - like at work. If I can hear individual words from snippets of conversation - like in coffee houses - I can't write.

I have a few songs that I associate with certain ships, characters, and stories. Have a sampling:

Thief (Our Lady Peace) - for Sirius/Remus in OotP
A Moon Song (David Berkeley) - for Harry/Ginny
Every Little Thing He Does is Magic (Shawn Colvin, covering Sting) - Hermione/Ron (her POV)
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic (Sting) - Ron/Hermione (his POV)
Rapunzel (Emilie Autumn) - Tara Maclay
By the Sword (Emilie Autumn) - Eowyn
The Last Snowfall (Vienna Teng) Kirk/McCoy in Let It Shine
This Tornado Loves You (Neko Cast) - Kirk/McCoy in The Forever 'verse
Make You Feel My Love (Bob Dylan) - Kirk/McCoy in The Forever 'verse
Strange Little Girl (The Stranglers) - Luna Lovegood
The Promise (Tracey Chapman) - Sirius/Remus post-OotP (resurrection theme *g*)
She's a Rebel (Green Day) - Princess Leia (Han/Leia)
Mistakes We Knew We Were Making (Straylight Run) - The Marauders (HP)
Criminal (Fiona Apple) - Faith Lehane

24 – Betaing – How many betas do you like to use to make sure there aren't any major flaws in your story? Do you have a Beta horror story or dream story?

Just one, if the beta is thorough. I want a beta who'll tell me what works and what doesn't, who knows the canon, who'll look stuff up and make sure my science or my history or whatever is correct. I want a beta who's invested in the story, who'll give me a push if they think I need one. I know I can be a little, um, blunt when I beta. I give what I would like to receive.

No horror stories, though one beta made me cry. In fairness to her, I hated the story and just wanted it to be done, but she insisted it needed serious revision, and she was right. I don't hate the story anymore. So I guess that's more like a dream story.

I have one DreamWidth invite code, if anyone wants it.

I got my ticket for "American Idiot," which will be in Pennsylvania in February. I'm driving three and a half hours in the dead of winter to see this show, so it had better be good! I also need to figure out where I'm going to stay. Anyone in or near State College, PA have a sofa I can crash on? I'm thinking I could take a detour and see Gettysburg on the way back south.

Also, it looks like I'll be in NY from the 22nd through the 27th. Yay! I have my EZ-Pass. Apparently they don't care that I have a Minnesota license and billing address.

My cat is an idiot. She's a part of my soul, but she's an idiot. So, I've been giving the cats the run of the house, at least on days that I'm home to supervise (my housemate has two young boys, and they can get a bit rowdy). This afternoon, Lloyd went downstairs and went to sleep on a chair. Sophie hung around upstairs with me, until I went down to make some lunch. Sophie planted herself at the top of the stairs and started yowling like her heart was broken. I entreated her to follow me, but nothing doing. She just sat there being miserable until I went back up, at which point she plastered herself to me. O_o I don't know what that cat would do if anything happened to me. Lloyd would be perfectly fine, I'm sure. *smishes them both*

First I post to my journals (LJ and DW) and AO3. Then I post links at a few fandom communities, usually one general and one character- or pairing-specific. I try to stagger my posts, sometimes only doing one a day, so people don't get hit by post after post. (I can't be the only one who finds it a little obnoxious.) I also figure that someone might not be online one day, and I wouldn't want them to miss my wonderful story! 22 – Have you ever participated in a fest or a Big Bang? If so, write about your favorite experience in relation to one. If not, are there any you've thought about doing? And if not, why not?

I've participated in a number of fests. I think I started doing them back in 2004, when I was involved in Harry Potter. I've never done a Big Bang, though I've signed up for one twice, in 2010 and 2011. Oddly enough, the year I didn't sign up - 2009 - was the year I ended up writing a 27k story. I don't think I was even aware of [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang when I was working on The Next Time You Say Forever. Though [livejournal.com profile] boosette very kindly made me a fan mix and some artwork anyway! Because she's awesome like that.

I think my favorite fest/exchange was Yuletide 2007. It was my first year participating, and I was all kinds of nervous. My recipient wanted a story about Geoffrey from "The Lion in Winter," and I decided to make my story somewhat historical, so I delved into the research and ended up writing one of my favorite stories: Nobody's Good Son. It was stressful, but ultimately a lot of fun. My recipient liked the story a lot, and I think I ended up receiving three stories that year, and they were all awesome.

Taught two classes this morning and everything went smoothly. I think I could actually get to like this. Not at 7:50 AM so much, but at other times of the day. *yawn* Of course, the nice thing (the only nice thing) about getting up really early is that there's nobody on the road, so even though I left the house 15 minutes after I'd intended, I got to work ten minutes early. I'm sure that's all very interesting. :)

I like these boots and these boots. I actually don't have pretty boots that I can wear with my long skirts. I have clunky winter boots. So I'm thinking... Also, if they're Dansko, they ought to be comfy and well-made.

Bath & Bodyworks has it's winter stuff out already? That's depressing.

It's been pretty busy today, considering it's Friday. Why is it only 1:00? I want to go home and watch the rest of DS9. Which is totally the precursor to the rebooted Battlestar Galactica. But I'm enjoying DS9 so much more. KIRA. \o/

Have I ever written a sequel to a story I wrote? *snicker* Why, yes. Yes, I have. Many, many times. Because I tend to write fairly short stories - some are really only scenes - I tend to spend time imagining what happened before, or what will happen next. And then I write that. And before I know it, I have a whole story arc. *facepalm*

Thanks for your opinions on the EZ-Pass. I ordered one last night. I hope the fact that my car is still registered in Minnesota doesn't freak them out. I can't think why it would, since I'm trying to give them money. I should re-register my car, but I was going to wait until my license expires (in January) or I find my own apartment, whichever happens first.

I found a title for the McCoy/Uhura story I've been playing with. Yay! Thank you, Pablo Neruda.

Also had a tiny brainwave re. the BtVS fic I've been struggling with for lo these many months. Still not 100% sure who's going to finally hit Xander with a clue-by-four. Dawn or Spike, I'm thinking. Dawn would be easier to write, but I think Spike would have a better understanding of what's going on. Hmm. I should probably decide if Spike survived the fight at the end of the series. That's important.

Still loving S7 of DS9. Every time an episode ends, it seems too soon. I want MORE MORE. Too bad I have to work and all. I have thoughts, which I'll save for when I've finished the series, but I just want to say - is it me, or does the Cardassians' emblem kind of resemble a vagina? Mmmm, kind of. I don't write stories based on other people's fan works (except remixes, of course) but I've found that I can't really write in a new fandom until I've read some really good fan fic first. When I first got into the HP fandom - and first started shipping Sirius/Remus - I stumbled upon [livejournal.com profile] canis_m's exquisite stories and it was like a revelation. I didn't borrow from her, but I felt like I'd been challenged, like the gauntlet had been thrown down. 18 – Where do you get the most inspiration for your stories (aka "bunnies") from?

From totally random things, most of the time. I'll have this image in my head, or come up with a line of dialog, or I'll hear something or smell something, and I'll make up a story around that. And sometimes that thing doesn't even make it into the story. Sometimes I just want to poke and prod at a character until she or he has an emotional outburst. I love emotional outbursts, especially from stoic characters.

It's a little different when I take prompts. I don't want a whole outline, but I prefer specific scenarios to abstract ideas. I really don't do well with lyrics, unless the song means something to me personally.

Titles, on the other hand, can go die in a fire. I wouldn't call them the bane of my existence, but they are a pain in the ass, more often than not. When I come up with a seriously good title, I just want to give myself a hug. Sometimes, if something occurs to me, I'll jot it down in a notebook so I can use it later. I don't mind them. I use them because what the story is about is pertinent information. Summaries should be concise (I try to keep mine down to one or two sentences). They should give the readers a flavor for the story without revealing so much that why would someone want to read this thing?

The only time they're kind of a pain is for really short fics. Sometimes, for those, I'll just mention the theme (if there was one) and any warnings, or the prompt that inspired the fic.

15 – Warnings – What do you feel is most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a story?

Well, anything that's likely to be triggery. Graphic violence, torture, rape and other forms of abuse, death. Not that there's a whole lot of that in my stories. *g* I'm not a huge fan of the concept of warnings, though I'd rather warn and give away my plot than trigger somebody. I've become a big fan of the block.

I won't warn for slash, het, or anything along those lines. Most of the time, I won't read stories that warn for slash or het (or women, or whatever). If I say the main pairing is Willow/Tara and you can't figure out that that means f/f, that's your problem.

Uhh, except that I did warn for het once. When I posted Heading Straight For a Fall to [livejournal.com profile] kirk_mccoy, I thought it would be prudent to note that though McCoy is in love with Jim, he kindasorta has sex with Winona. I didn't use the warning when I posted to [livejournal.com profile] st_reboot or my own journal. I run the gamut. Explicit porn isn't always my most favorite thing to write (it's more fun to have written it than to actually write it sometimes) but I'll write it. 13 – Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?

I like my stories to be canon-compliant. If canon gives me something I don't like, I'll try to work around it rather than ignore it. For example (X-Men: First Class spoilers): Darwin appears to have died in canon. But we don't know he isn't going to come back after the movie ends. And so that's when I set most of my Darwin/Havok stories. Similarly, Remus/Tonks being canon doesn't preclude the possibility of Remus/Sirius, at least before Sirius's death in Order of the Phoenix.

Canon: it's more like guidelines.

I'll always wonder if I would have enjoyed the last two Harry Potter books more if I hadn't been so heavily involved in fandom when they came out. Not that I was so incredibly invested by that point, but by the time I finished reading The Deathly Hallows, I was pretty burnt out.

Hmm. And I've been enjoying X-Men: First Class more since I started writing fan fiction for it. The movie's flaws are still pretty glaring, but somehow, being able to facepalm with a whole bunch of people makes it better.

Mmm, day off. I need to do stuff (like take my bike in for repairs and buy some wine for the weekend), but I'm inclined to be lazy. Yesterday was pretty full. I worked in the morning, then spent part of the afternoon walking around the Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, MD. They were beautiful, especially the nature trail, but I guess I'm used to biking, not walking. And then I spent the evening babysitting my co-workers two young sons. Actually, that's probably what knocked me out. We played various games of tag until it started to get dark.

The older son is a bit of a handful, but I kind of adore these kids. O_O

(Which I guess means I'm staying here until I can afford my own apartment, even though I've been looking into other roommates. Also, I'm getting along really well with my co-worker. And the cats seem to like the space, although Sophie runs and hides every time she hears the garage door opening.)

I think I might go and see "American Idiot" in State College after all. I really do want to see it, and if I drive carefully, I should be all right. Maybe the weather will be nice. It's about a three-hour drive, but maybe I could stop at Gettysburg on the way back. I assume the site is open in late-February.

Anyhow.

12 – Have you ever attempted an "adaptation" story of a favorite book or movie but set in a different fandom?

I like the word "attempted." Actually, I wrote three when I was in Gundam Wing. I wrote two versions of "The Snow Queen," one based on Andersen's story (and starring Quatre as Gerda, Trowa as Kay, Duo as the crow, Noin as the robber girl, and Lady Une in the title role) and one based on another version, starring Middie Une.

The Middie version is still online here: The Lady in the Tower.

I also did an adaptation of "The Princess Bride" (the movie version). Doctor J was reading the story to Heero. Duo was Westley, Hilde was Buttercup, Zechs was Humperdinck, Treize was Count Rugen, Wufei was Inigo, Trowa (muscular!Trowa from "Endless Waltz") was Fezzik, Dekim Barton was Vizzini, Dorothy was the mocking crone, and I think Quinze was Yellin. Oh, and Howard and Sally were Miracle Max and Valerie! And all the other women were fantasy girls Heero was thinking about. And Quatre showed up at the end as a random stableboy, with whom Trowa rode off. Of course.

My first thought was to cast Relena as Buttercup, since she is a princess, but Zechs and Treize had to be Humperdinck and Rugen, respectively, (Wufei was avenging his wife) and that would not have worked (big incest squick here).

It was fun. I think I stuck too closely to the original script, but whatever.

If I wrote fusion stories in any of my other fandoms, I've forgotten them.

I should write today. I started a little McCoy/Uhura story for somebody, and I'm brainstorming another Darwin/Havok story (five times Darwin saved Havok, and one time Havok returned the favor), and I finally have a plot bunny - I think - for the story I promised I'd write about Simon and River.

11 – Genre – do you prefer certain genres of fic when you're writing? What kind do you tend to write most?

If hurt/comfort is a genre, then yes, I suppose I do. The thing is, I love writing about emotions and relationships between people (not necessarily romantic relationships). Taking a stoic character and poking at her (or him, or them) until she opens up to somebody else. My favorite aspect of h/c isn't the hurt, but the trust that's almost inevitably a component of the comfort. Trust is so tantalizing.

I wish I had the discipline to write a long action/adventure story, or something about political intrigue, but mostly I just write scenes. One-acts, I guess.
