One Winter's Night

Fandom: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Word Count: 1995
Rating: general audiences
Warnings: N/A
Characters: Belle, Maurice, Belle's mother, Philippe

Summary: How Belle came to live in her poor, provincial town.

My Yuletide assignment!!

I tried writing this story from a few different angles, to no avail. I was about to default when it suddenly hit me that it would work as a kind of father/daughter road-trip. And we were off! In their request, the recipient had referenced a YA novel set in the B&B universe, in which the enchantress is actually Belle's long-lost mother (!) I thought that sounded cool, but I hadn't read the book and I didn't have time to read the book. So I kind of alluded to the possibility, and you can interpret that however you like. See my notes for an explanation of the historical references, which were fun to wrangle. (In an old, old draft, I had young Belle meeting with Voltaire.)

Anyway, Happy New Year! I'm supposed to be hiking right now, but I did a long hike in the snow yesterday with some friends, got chilled and exhausted, and woke up this morning with zero desire to get in my car and drive an hour, never mind put one foot in front of the other. Too bad: it's a beautiful morning. But yesterday's hike was great, so I'm not too put out. It brought my total summits to 66. And I butt-slid down a cliff (on purpose) which was kind of awesome.

Maybe I'll do something mildly athletic tomorrow, if there's time.

I had a dream last night that John Boyega and I were on some sort of Resistance mission together. I had no idea what I was doing, but he was pretty bad-ass, as one might expect.

And this one I wrote just because. I saw the episode, then I saw the prompt, and I started hearing Kara's internal monologue in my head. It's just a little missing scene, which will no doubt get jossed when the show returns. But until then...

Over sixteen years, Diaval became Maleficents wings, eyes, ears, and much more. There were times when he was glad to help, and times when he wondered if he was losing himself.

This was my assignment. I always sort of knew what I wanted to write about this character, but about two weeks before the deadline I scrapped my first draft, since it wasn't quite working. I'm glad I did, since I'm happier with the results. I kept seeing crows on my walks around the neighborhood. Nothing they did really influenced this story, but I liked seeing them while I was writing.

Well, thought Shayera, it's not Christmas if I'm not getting thrown out of some dive.

This was the treat I wrote, which ended up being a lot longer than I'd anticipated. I should have posted it in the main collection, I guess, but instructions were contradictory and I didn't feel like poking the mods mere hours before the collection went live. Anyway. This is future fic, but nothing bad happens to Mari. (I would never. It's hard: Shayera was there first and I love her, but Mari is also awesome. And I also ship John with Wally. *sigh* They should just share him, but that probably wouldn't be in character.)

Anyway, both of my recipients liked their stories, so I'm happy! This Yuletide was a lot less stressful than last year's, since I didn't try to do anything too ambitious.

I managed to write two stories for Yuletide this year (though one was a treat), which makes me feel better about defaulting last year.

As Sure As There is Night and There is Day (1718 words) by Thistlerose
Fandom: Ladyhawke (1985)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Isabeau d'Anjou/Etienne Navarre
Summary: A few months after her arrival in Aquila, Isabeau D'Anjou feels very much alone and frightened. But she's still open to the possibility of romantic love.

This one was my assignment. I'd been wanting to write a Ladyhawke story since I first signed up for Yuletide in 2007, so this should have been easy. But I ended up tripping myself up by trying to put give the story some kind of historical context. In particular, I wanted to give Isabeau a background; if she's the daughter of a Count of Anjou, Ladyhawke is set within a specific span of years (and Isabeau is related to a lot of famous people). But then everything else is anachronistic. And, anyway, there is no Aquila, France. *hands in the air* Anyway, I came up with a lot of head canon that never made it into the story. I wish I'd gotten started on the story sooner, and not bothered with trying to make it make sense. As it is, I'm happy with some of the imagery I used. I had a first draft that I rather liked, but discarded because it was starting to become more about Philippe than the lovers. I might try to salvage it at some point.

In Winter (716 words) by Thistlerose
Fandom: The Welsh Princes Trilogy - Sharon Kay Penman
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Joanna Plantagenet & John of England
Summary: John spots two of his children having a snowball fight, and does some reflecting.

This prompt had sort of been on my radar, since The Welsh Princes Trilogy was a fandom I'd nominated. I had a burst of inspiration on Christmas eve, and wrote up this story before going into the city. This time, I could have gotten all historical, but I ended up not making any references to anything. I was a little concerned that people would think I was whitewashing John, but I think Sharon Kay Penman does a fair job of portraying him as a man capable of both tenderness and scumbaggery. And this is just a tiny scene, in which he's interacting with his young children. I always thought his relationship with his daughter Joanna was one of the most touching and interesting parts of "Here Be Dragons."

Btw, I decided to lump all my Plantagenet-related stories under one tag. That includes The Lion in Winter, The White Queen, and now The Welsh Princes Trilogy. I still consider them mostly separate canons.

Fandom: Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences (a little sex)
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bess/Much the Miller's Son, Robin/Marian
Characters: Much the Miller's Son, Prince John, Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Bess, Eleanor of Aquitaine
Summary: Bess pretends to be simple, but she's more than what she seems.

This is my Yuletide 2011 story, which I wrote for [personal profile] notannette. She asked for a post-canon story (or a fusion with screwball comedies of the 1930s, which would have been awesome, if I'd been more familiar with the genre). I decided to go with Bess as my POV character because she's adorable in the film and I liked the idea that there was more to her. There's some evidence to support my interpretation: Bess has been married multiple times, sneaks in and out of the castle, actively pursues Much, and is fiercely protective of Maid Marian. She even snaps at Robin once! Do not mess with Bess.

I wish I'd had a little more time to develop my idea. I'd like to have explored Bess's backstory and her (professional) relationship with Eleanor of Aquitaine, which I only got to hint at here. (Yeah, I brought in Eleanor. I couldn't resist trying to fix the historical inaccuracies of the source, just a little bit.)

Summary: Kate and Adam, after Lymond's homecoming.
A/N: Written for [ profile] elishavah as a Yuletide 2007 treat. It's approximately 600 words, set during the last chapter of Checkmate. This ship was hinted at pretty strongly in the last few pages of the series, and it made me squeeful because Kate = awesome, and Adam = deserving of awesome after all he's been through.
