One Winter's Night

Fandom: Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Word Count: 1995
Rating: general audiences
Warnings: N/A
Characters: Belle, Maurice, Belle's mother, Philippe

Summary: How Belle came to live in her poor, provincial town.

My Yuletide assignment!!

I tried writing this story from a few different angles, to no avail. I was about to default when it suddenly hit me that it would work as a kind of father/daughter road-trip. And we were off! In their request, the recipient had referenced a YA novel set in the B&B universe, in which the enchantress is actually Belle's long-lost mother (!) I thought that sounded cool, but I hadn't read the book and I didn't have time to read the book. So I kind of alluded to the possibility, and you can interpret that however you like. See my notes for an explanation of the historical references, which were fun to wrangle. (In an old, old draft, I had young Belle meeting with Voltaire.)

Anyway, Happy New Year! I'm supposed to be hiking right now, but I did a long hike in the snow yesterday with some friends, got chilled and exhausted, and woke up this morning with zero desire to get in my car and drive an hour, never mind put one foot in front of the other. Too bad: it's a beautiful morning. But yesterday's hike was great, so I'm not too put out. It brought my total summits to 66. And I butt-slid down a cliff (on purpose) which was kind of awesome.

Maybe I'll do something mildly athletic tomorrow, if there's time.

I had a dream last night that John Boyega and I were on some sort of Resistance mission together. I had no idea what I was doing, but he was pretty bad-ass, as one might expect.
thistlerose: (seasonal: winter)
I watched the first two episodes of "Agent Carter" last night. I liked it! Better than most of the MCU movies, in fact. Peggy's a fun character, and I'm looking forward to seeing what she does next. It's nice seeing Enver Gjokaj again too; I was very impressed with him on "Dollhouse." Is it just me or does Angie seem to have a crush on Peggy? In any case, I love seeing two women looking out for each other.

I managed to write five stories for [community profile] fandom_stocking, though four were drabbles.

For us all who are gathered here (1887 words) by Thistlerose

Joe and Barry wait up for Iris on New Year's Eve.

And drabbles for Justice League (Animated), Dragonriders of Pern, and Lion Voltron )

Things I want to write in 2015:

- The last part of that damn Pern AU, which has been in progress since 2009
- The story of Path's first mating flight, which I think I started in 2010 (I'm just in the mood for Pern, for some reason)
- A John/Wally/Shayera story, of which there's a sad lack at the moment (I even have a few potential titles)

I'm trying to decide if I want to go on this hike I signed up for tomorrow. On the one hand, it snowed this morning and it's supposed to be sunny tomorrow, so I'm sure it will be beautiful at the top of the mountain. On the other hand, the high for tomorrow is supposed to be 17 without the windchill, so I don't know. I do have a lot of layers (I bought long underwear yesterday!) but, as my co-worker pointed out, I can't cover every part of me.

Her: You can still get frost bite on your nose. Classes start tomorrow. Do you really want to come in on Monday with a peeling nose?

Me: Actually, that sounds kind of bad-ass.

Her: Oh, that's right, you're the one who came in with the black eye after your bike accident.

(I don't actually want frost bite on my nose, or anywhere else.)

A Bird in the Hand (2696 words) by Thistlerose
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Maleficent (2014)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Maleficent (Maleficent), Diaval (Maleficent), Aurora (Maleficent)
Additional Tags: Character Study, Yuletide

Over sixteen years, Diaval became Maleficents wings, eyes, ears, and much more. There were times when he was glad to help, and times when he wondered if he was losing himself.

This was my assignment. I always sort of knew what I wanted to write about this character, but about two weeks before the deadline I scrapped my first draft, since it wasn't quite working. I'm glad I did, since I'm happier with the results. I kept seeing crows on my walks around the neighborhood. Nothing they did really influenced this story, but I liked seeing them while I was writing.

The Fundamental Things Apply (1791 words) by Thistlerose
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Justice League & Justice League Unlimited (Cartoons)

Relationships: Shayera Hol/John Stewart
Characters: Shayera Hol, John Stewart
Additional Tags: Post-Series, Winter, Bickering

Well, thought Shayera, it's not Christmas if I'm not getting thrown out of some dive.

This was the treat I wrote, which ended up being a lot longer than I'd anticipated. I should have posted it in the main collection, I guess, but instructions were contradictory and I didn't feel like poking the mods mere hours before the collection went live. Anyway. This is future fic, but nothing bad happens to Mari. (I would never. It's hard: Shayera was there first and I love her, but Mari is also awesome. And I also ship John with Wally. *sigh* They should just share him, but that probably wouldn't be in character.)

Anyway, both of my recipients liked their stories, so I'm happy! This Yuletide was a lot less stressful than last year's, since I didn't try to do anything too ambitious.

The Other Shoe Drops (4795 words) by Thistlerose
Fandom: Cinderella (1950), Disney Princesses
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Prince Charming/Cinderella
Characters: Prince Charming (Cinderella 1950), Cinderella (Fairy Tales), King (Cinderella 1950)
Summary: Cinderella comes down to earth.

Notes: The other week I watched Disney's "Cinderella" for the first time in perhaps twenty-five years. Two things struck me. One was how thoroughly charming the movie is. It won't win many feminist points, but it did come out in 1950 and it's still a lovely film. The other was that the prince really, really, really doesn't seem to want to get married. I decided to explore that a little and, before I knew it, I had the longest story I've written since 2011. How did that happen? Anyway, this is meant to be a bit satirical.

This is also a fill for the "Trust and Vows" square on my Trope Bingo card (round three).

I met my cousin's new cat, the stray I accidentally let into her building on Thanksgiving. I like him. He's a funny looking guy - his hind legs are comically long, and he has these sad yellow eyes - and he was fairly social. He's taken to mimicking her other cat. When Carlyle wants to be petted, suddenly so does Mac. When Carlyle wants to sleep on a particular chair, suddenly so does Mac. It's like Mac is studying Car, to try to learn how to cat. It's hard to imagine this poor boy on the street. He has some health issues - mostly asthma - but he's doing okay.

I wrote this for Round Three of [community profile] trope_bingo. If you want to take a look at my card and help me figure out where to go from there, I'd appreciate it. I'd kind of like to make each square a different fandom. Options are horizontal or vertical since I don't think I can do anything with that diagonal.

I managed to write two stories for Yuletide this year (though one was a treat), which makes me feel better about defaulting last year.

As Sure As There is Night and There is Day (1718 words) by Thistlerose
Fandom: Ladyhawke (1985)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Isabeau d'Anjou/Etienne Navarre
Summary: A few months after her arrival in Aquila, Isabeau D'Anjou feels very much alone and frightened. But she's still open to the possibility of romantic love.

This one was my assignment. I'd been wanting to write a Ladyhawke story since I first signed up for Yuletide in 2007, so this should have been easy. But I ended up tripping myself up by trying to put give the story some kind of historical context. In particular, I wanted to give Isabeau a background; if she's the daughter of a Count of Anjou, Ladyhawke is set within a specific span of years (and Isabeau is related to a lot of famous people). But then everything else is anachronistic. And, anyway, there is no Aquila, France. *hands in the air* Anyway, I came up with a lot of head canon that never made it into the story. I wish I'd gotten started on the story sooner, and not bothered with trying to make it make sense. As it is, I'm happy with some of the imagery I used. I had a first draft that I rather liked, but discarded because it was starting to become more about Philippe than the lovers. I might try to salvage it at some point.

In Winter (716 words) by Thistlerose
Fandom: The Welsh Princes Trilogy - Sharon Kay Penman
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Joanna Plantagenet & John of England
Summary: John spots two of his children having a snowball fight, and does some reflecting.

This prompt had sort of been on my radar, since The Welsh Princes Trilogy was a fandom I'd nominated. I had a burst of inspiration on Christmas eve, and wrote up this story before going into the city. This time, I could have gotten all historical, but I ended up not making any references to anything. I was a little concerned that people would think I was whitewashing John, but I think Sharon Kay Penman does a fair job of portraying him as a man capable of both tenderness and scumbaggery. And this is just a tiny scene, in which he's interacting with his young children. I always thought his relationship with his daughter Joanna was one of the most touching and interesting parts of "Here Be Dragons."

Btw, I decided to lump all my Plantagenet-related stories under one tag. That includes The Lion in Winter, The White Queen, and now The Welsh Princes Trilogy. I still consider them mostly separate canons.
thistlerose: (Default)
The Lucky Ones (613 words) by Thistlerose
Fandom: The White Queen (TV)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Anne Neville/Richard III
Summary: Anne will never shed any tears for George of Clarence. But Richard is distraught, and Anne loves Richard.

Apparently I am writing The White Queen fanfic now. I guess it was inevitable, ever since it was revealed that Aneurin Barnard has freckles on his shoulders. (Which is basically what this story is all about. Well, no, it's also about Anne, whom I like a lot.)

So, that's what I did over Labor Day weekend. I also made some progress on my Santana/Brittany road trip story. I got fresh peaches from Alyson's Orchard and made a cobbler, which came out deliciously. (I froze half of it, since I already have a strawberry rhubarb pie and I'm going to be making an apple cake for Rosh Hashanna. Though I'm going to share the latter with my co-workers because I'm nice.) I did laundry.

I watched "Mary Poppins" and decided that if Mary and Wonder Woman were ever to team up, nothing bad would happen to anyone ever again.

I went for two bike rides, which were mostly yucky since it's so ridiculously humid.

I've been having trouble sleeping. Once I'm asleep I tend to stay asleep until my alarm rings or the cats start bouncing on me. It's the getting to sleep part that's hard. Last night, I tossed and turned until 2am. I don't know if there's just too much on my mind these days, or what. Anyway, I'm exhausted and I have to teach a class in two hours and I don't feel prepared, and ugh.

The Stuff of Legends (1931 words) by faviconThistlerose
Fandom: Adventures of Robin Hood (1938)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences (a little sex)
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Bess/Much the Miller's Son, Robin/Marian
Characters: Much the Miller's Son, Prince John, Robin Hood, Maid Marian, Bess, Eleanor of Aquitaine
Summary: Bess pretends to be simple, but she's more than what she seems.

This is my Yuletide 2011 story, which I wrote for [personal profile] notannette. She asked for a post-canon story (or a fusion with screwball comedies of the 1930s, which would have been awesome, if I'd been more familiar with the genre). I decided to go with Bess as my POV character because she's adorable in the film and I liked the idea that there was more to her. There's some evidence to support my interpretation: Bess has been married multiple times, sneaks in and out of the castle, actively pursues Much, and is fiercely protective of Maid Marian. She even snaps at Robin once! Do not mess with Bess.

I wish I'd had a little more time to develop my idea. I'd like to have explored Bess's backstory and her (professional) relationship with Eleanor of Aquitaine, which I only got to hint at here. (Yeah, I brought in Eleanor. I couldn't resist trying to fix the historical inaccuracies of the source, just a little bit.)

Nobody's Good Son

Fandom: The Lion in Winter
Rating: PG-ish
Summary: The Christmas court was kind of a bust. Geoffrey Plantagenet plans his next move.
Notes: This was for [ profile] sharpeslass and it was my assignment. After receiving it, I went straight to [ profile] themis, who proved to be the very best sort of beta reader. She deserves many, many thanks, as do the members of [ profile] plantagenesta, who pointed me to Google Books and The Charters of Constance Duchess of Brittany. I was a little nervous about introducing Constance, but I came to like her a lot, and the reaction to her has been overwhelmingly positive.

I loved the plot when I came up with it, but I wrote it very quickly and I was pretty nervous. This movie is so dear to me and I really wanted to do it justice. I don't know that I have, but - guh, I'm happy with this story.

( "I told you not to stay away too long." )

The Time That Thou Has Lost and Spent

Fandom: The Lymond Chronicles
Rating: PG
Summary: Kate Somerville and Adam Blacklock, after Lymond's homecoming.
A/N: And this was the treat I wrote for [ profile] elishavah. It's approximately 600 words, set during the last chapter of Checkmate. This ship was hinted at pretty strongly in the last few pages of the series, and it made me squeeful because Kate = awesome, and Adam = deserving of awesome after all he's been through. So I was happy to have an excuse to write it.

( I would have given you my heart in a blackberry pie, she thought a little sadly. I give you my daughter. It's the same thing, more or less. )
