thistlerose: (Star Trek: lovely new Kirk)
Title: On the Windy Side of Care

Pairing(s): Kirk/McCoy, Uhura (with references to Kirk/others, including Kirk/Gaila, and possibly unrequited!Kirk/Uhura)
Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] tsarina_sofia, who won me in the auction to help Queensland. Thank you! Also many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lauriegilbert and [livejournal.com profile] mijan for looking this over. 4,800 words.

Summary: Academy fic. Kirk and McCoy are friends with benefits. A remark from Uhura makes Kirk wonder if they aren't more.

'I know why you call him Bones.' )
thistlerose: (Star Trek: Kirk/McCoy: final frontier)
Title: A Show of Strength
Fandom: Star Trek: AOS
Rating: teen (language, violence - see below for details)
Pairing(s): Kirk/McCoy
Contains: (highlight to reveal) Violence and related injuries are alluded to throughout. One scene contains an actual beating, but it isn't gratuitous, IMO.
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] givemefever for [livejournal.com profile] thepurpledove project. Also inspired by this prompt over at the [livejournal.com profile] buckleup_meme. 8,500 words. Many, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] mijan for beta reading.

Summary: McCoy is badly injured on an away mission. Who bears responsibility is not at all clear-cut, leading to much miscommunication and internalized guilt.

McCoy knows he's hurt. )
thistlerose: (Star Trek: MOAR BONES PLZ)
Faithful Friends

Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Rating: teen
Ship: Kirk/McCoy (background Spock/Uhura)
Summary: They're stranded on an ice planet, in a tomb, for crying out loud, with injuries, limited supplies, and malfunctioning communicators. It's still the best Christmas Jim's ever had.
A/N: Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ayaerhis and [livejournal.com profile] abigail89 for beta reading, and to [livejournal.com profile] sangueuk, for the push. Written for [livejournal.com profile] space_wrapped. 4,400 words.

He felt like he was forgetting something: not anything important like his serial number or the Enterprise's security codes. But it bothered him, and he found himself strangely reluctant to tell Bones. He didn't want to worry him when he had fractured femurs and punctured lungs to deal with, and something told him he should feel guilty for forgetting it – whatever it was. )
thistlerose: (Kimber)
I shouldn't complain about all this orientationeering. I'm going to need everything I learn, I'm sure, and also, I'm getting to explore all these parts of the library I'd never seen, like our special collections and the music library. Awesome.

_____

Apparently, my across-the-hall neighbor has access to an endless supply of fresh mint, and I'm to let her know if I ever need any. That's awesome too. I'll have to figure out some minty recipes.

_____

Warming up some frozen samosas (which are not fabulous but will do in a pinch) and then "TrueBlood" time! Eee! So sad the season's nearly over. To what else will I look forward on Mondays?

_____

So, here's all the fics that I posted this month. I finished another one (I mean, the one I'd mentioned yesterday or the day before) but it's not ready yet. Once more, they're all Star Trek *facepalm* but not all Reboot.

Scattered
Fandom: Star Trek (Reboot or TOS - when I wrote this, I imagined Doohan's Scott and Urban's McCoy O_O )
Characters/Ships: Scotty & McCoy
Rating: teen, for language
Summary: McCoy really hates transporters, and apparently they really hate him. 810 words.

Trouble With a Capital T
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Characters/Ships: Jim & Sam Kirk
Rating: all audiences
Summary: Is it still laudable when there are ulterior motives? 730 words.

Absence & the heart & blah blah blah
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Characters/Ships: Jim & Winona Kirk

The Next Time You Say Forever (Complete)
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Characters/Ships: Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura, with Joanna McCoy and Spock Prime
Rating: Adult
Summary: After his ex-wife's death, McCoy is forced to leave the Enterprise to look after his teenage daughter. Under normal circumstances, this would be the end of…whatever it is he has with Kirk that's more than friendship, but less than what he wants. But the universe has other intentions. About 27,000 spread over six chapters. This fic is my pride and joy at the moment.

Lessons in Spontaneity
Fandom: Star Trek Reboot
Characters/Ships: Uhura/Spock
Rating: all ages
Summary: He is learning. 560 words.

Down the Long Corridors of Air

Main Characters & Ships: Kirk, McCoy, Spock, Spock Prime, Winona Kirk, Joanna McCoy (Kirk/McCoy, Spock/Uhura, Joanna/Chekov)
Summary: "D'you think we could've been more than friends?" "I think maybe we were. Exactly what we were, I don't know. But I think we were always more than friends." The Ballad of Bones and Jim.

Reprise

Fandom: Enchanted
Rating: PG
Ships: Canon ships, plus Edward/Giselle (but no infidelity)
Summary: Giselle returns to Andalasia after eleven years and finds Edward under a spell and in need of her help.
A/N: Written for Jade Sabre, for Yuletide 2008. 5,100 words. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] krabapple and [livejournal.com profile] heidi8 for beta reading. (Hee. There's a tiny plot hole we all missed. Just pretend it's not there, okay?) I think this is my favorite story that I wrote all year. It was certainly one of the most challenging.

( "Like I was saying," Pip said, after Edward locked them in the tower, "things haven't been so great here." )

To Harp and to Hold

Fandom: The Dragonriders of Pern
Rating: PG-13
Ship: Alemi/Elgion
Summary: Alemi is briefly torn between tradition and Harper Elgion.
A/N: And this one was for [livejournal.com profile] gillianinoz, also for Yuletide 2008. 1,200 words. I'd just finished reading Dragonsong for the first time since I was thirteen, and was struck by - what I took to be - Elgion's obvious attraction to Alemi. I couldn't help wondering if it was reciprocated. Also, tent peg! I love you, Anne, but oh my god. *is evil*

( Shards, he thought. If we clung to every single tradition, Menolly would not now be at Harper Hall, and I wouldn't be camping on this beach tonight, fulfilling a boyhood dream. )
thistlerose: (Plantagenets are twisted love)
My [livejournal.com profile] yuletide 2007 fics, let me show you them:

Nobody's Good Son

Fandom: The Lion in Winter
Rating: PG-ish
Summary: The Christmas court was kind of a bust. Geoffrey Plantagenet plans his next move.
Notes: This was for [livejournal.com profile] sharpeslass and it was my assignment. After receiving it, I went straight to [livejournal.com profile] themis, who proved to be the very best sort of beta reader. She deserves many, many thanks, as do the members of [livejournal.com profile] plantagenesta, who pointed me to Google Books and The Charters of Constance Duchess of Brittany. I was a little nervous about introducing Constance, but I came to like her a lot, and the reaction to her has been overwhelmingly positive.

( "I'm nothing like Richard. I believe in knives in the dark and broken promises. Christ, there's little else I believe in. Don't you know that by now?" )

****

Where the Air is Clear

Fandom: Mary Poppins (movie)
Rating: PG
Summary: Mary and Bert, thirty years later.
Notes: First of all, thank you to my beta readers, [livejournal.com profile] penknife and [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r! This one was my pinch hit, written for [livejournal.com profile] sotto_voice, and OMG you guys! I loved the plot when I came up with it, but I wrote it very quickly and I was pretty nervous. This movie is so dear to me and I really wanted to do it justice. I don't know that I have, but - guh, I'm happy with this story.

( "I told you not to stay away too long." )

****

The Time That Thou Has Lost and Spent

Fandom: The Lymond Chronicles
Rating: PG
Summary: Kate Somerville and Adam Blacklock, after Lymond's homecoming.
A/N: And this was the treat I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] elishavah. It's approximately 600 words, set during the last chapter of Checkmate. This ship was hinted at pretty strongly in the last few pages of the series, and it made me squeeful because Kate = awesome, and Adam = deserving of awesome after all he's been through. So I was happy to have an excuse to write it.

( I would have given you my heart in a blackberry pie, she thought a little sadly. I give you my daughter. It's the same thing, more or less. )
thistlerose: (Mary Poppins: Mary/Bert OTP!)
Where the Air is Clear

Fandom: Mary Poppins (movie)
Rating: all ages
Summary: Mary and Bert, thirty years later.
Notes: Thank you to my beta readers, [livejournal.com profile] penknife and [livejournal.com profile] midnitemaraud_r! This was written for [livejournal.com profile] sotto_voice for Yuletide 2007. 1,270 words. Originally posted here.

'I told you not to stay away too long.' )
thistlerose: (Ron/Hermione!)
The House-Elf Liberation Full Frontal

Fandom: Harry Potter
Ship: Ron/Hermione
Rating: NC-17
Summary: Is this the moment? Fuck, yeah!
A/N: This isn't 100% canon-compliant, but it's what I wanted to happen immediately following The Snog. It bugged me that after Ron's Awesome Suggestion, no one actually went to free the house-elves. This is about 1,000 words.

There wasn't time for this. You-Know-Who was coming and Harry needed them back. )
thistlerose: (Eilonwy)
Wedding Night

Fandom: Prydain
Rating: PG
Ship: Taran/Eilonwy
Summary: He's perfectly willing to be romantic, if only she'll let him get a word in edgewise.
A/N: I included this ship in the list I made yesterday, and it got me thinking. Their love is so obvious, but we so rarely get them alone together. This is set very shortly after the end of The High King, and contains many spoilers and a little romance. Approx. 1,500 words.

Taran wondered if he was being rebuked. It was hard to tell. )
thistlerose: (Harry Potter)
Accidents Happen

Fandom: HP
Rating: PG
Characters/Ships: Harry, Voldemort, and others, with just a little Harry/Ginny
Summary: Trelawney's first prophecy is complete tosh, and when Voldemort is finally killed, it's not by Harry. Not even by a Gryffindor.
A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] omniocular's AU Extravaganza. The link will take you to that comm. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aberforths_rug for the swift proofread. 1,560 words. This was fun to write.

( Harry had come to a dead end. )
thistlerose: (puppylove)
Mirror

Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: R
Ship: Sirius/Remus
Summary: Mrs. Lupin thinks it's terribly nice of Sirius Black to let Remus live with him in his flat. If she only knew...
A/N: For [livejournal.com profile] shaggydogstail, who wanted a fic about the talking mirror in Happy To Be Your Fool. This story is about twice as long as I thought it would be, but I think I like it. As I was writing it, I thought that what Sirius does in the beginning is rather mean. Then I remembered that Remus did kind of the same thing to him in Consequences, so he's finally getting his comeuppance. 1,860 words. Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] remusxsirius and [livejournal.com profile] the_kennel.
ETA: [livejournal.com profile] shoochan made artwork! I love Remus's expression. (PG)

Would you rather he sleep in my bed? )
thistlerose: (darkness)
Hose

Fandom: HP
Rating: PG
Characters: Sirius, Harry (background Sirius/Remus, but it's mostly gen)
Summary: Sirius bonds with his fourteen-month-old godson.
A/N: This one is for [livejournal.com profile] dramaphile, who wanted a story about this line from Close To Heaven: So, Harry-or-Rose (or “Hose”, as Sirius called the unborn baby when Lily wasn’t listening) was awake, too. Approx. 1,150 words. Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] omniocular (here). You can read the story in French here.

'She told me you’d sleep through the storm,' Sirius informed him. 'Give him his supper, put him in bed, make sure he has his bear. He’ll sleep like he’s under a spell. Those were her exact words, I’ll have you know. The liar.' )
thistlerose: (peace)
If A Lie May Do Thee Grace (Only The Good Die Young Remix)

Fandom: A Separate Peace
Rating: PG
Ship: Phineas/Gene
Summary: "He just gets the sense that nothing he does penetrates very deeply. Gene crouches deep inside his skin, and no amount of jostling on Phineas's part can tempt him to the surface."
A/N: This is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] musesfool's To Speak Is To Lie. Written in secret (blame [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge), and in thanks for all the work and love she put into [livejournal.com profile] remixredux. Beta read by [livejournal.com profile] eumenides1. Approx. 1,400 words. The title is from Shakespeare's 1 Henry IV.

The thing about Gene is, he's damn near impossible to touch.
thistlerose: (magic)
and you, my wayward girl

fandom: Harry Potter
Ship: Neville/Luna
Rating: mature
Summary: Luna Lovegood defies cartography.
A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] wizard_love. Happy (belated) Valentine's Day to [livejournal.com profile] hildigunnur! I wanted to make the fic hotter, but Neville got squirmy when I suggested the kinks. Thanks so much to my beta readers, [livejournal.com profile] marauderthesn and [livejournal.com profile] krabapple, and to [livejournal.com profile] ragdoll and [livejournal.com profile] trinnifer for running the exchange. Approx. 3,100 words. The title is from a Belle & Sebastian song.

It's when he's not looking that it happens.
thistlerose: (HP women kick ass)
My Sweetest Downfall

Fandom: Harry Potter
Ships: Harry/Ginny, Ron/Hermione
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Harry spends Christmas at the Burrow and discovers that it's easier to be noble when Ginny isn't right down the corridor.
A/N: Written for [livejournal.com profile] rhoswen_rosier for [livejournal.com profile] harry_holidays. Hope you like the story and that you've had a lovely holiday! Thanks so much to my wonderful beta reader, [livejournal.com profile] krabapple, and to [livejournal.com profile] underlucius for running this fic exchange. Approx. 6,000 words. The link will take you to my fic journal. Cross-posted to [livejournal.com profile] harry_and_ginny and [livejournal.com profile] weasleyworship.

( Harry announced that he was ready for bed after losing his third chess game with Ron. )
thistlerose: (NYC)
Leave-taking

Rating: PG
Ships: Mark/Roger, Roger/Mimi
Summary: Not the last moment, but one of them.
A/N: I've been stalled on a dozen different projects, three of which are due this month, but I told myself that if I could just finish one story, the others would come. Here's hoping! This is my first "Rent" ficlet, prompted by the fact that I saw the movie then had a bowl of chicken soup last night. At 640 words, I kind of think of it as a very long drabble. For [livejournal.com profile] rosesanguina and [livejournal.com profile] tarie.

( When you're dying in America at the end of the millennium / you're not alone )
thistlerose: (Remus)
I'm sitting by my window, listening to Scottish music, with a cup of tea and a lit candle beside me. There's snow all over the roofs and treebranches and clouds are piling up in what I think is the west. There's this one star visible above the clouds. It's really quite pretty and quiet. This, and the fact that I just spent a few minutes going through [livejournal.com profile] nassima's older paintings made me think of a story I wrote a little over a year ago. I still really like it, so I thought I'd share it (again).

Storytelling

Ship: Sirius/Remus
Rating: R
Summary: Lonely and bored in Number 12 Grimmauld Place, Sirius induces Remus to forget about his mission and keep him company for the afternoon.
A/N: [livejournal.com profile] nassima did a gorgeous illustration of this fic, here.
