The Scale of the Universe website has been updated. Now it's even shinier.

Okay, I'm going to New York now.

My housemate is having dinner guests tomorrow, so I think I'll take myself to a movie. Either "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" or "War Horse," I think. Hmm.

This miniature food is pretty amazing. To the point that it's making me hungry.

And look what else! Hogwarts miniatures! Pretty overpriced, but still very cute.

I finally got my Maryland driver's license and plates, though I'm having some trouble getting the old plates off my car. So I'm driving around with the wrong plates, which is obnoxious, but I have the new plates in case I get pulled over. Which I won't be. I hope.

Astronomers are looking at gamma rays from a star that exploded 13 billion years ago.

I ♥ science SO MUCH sometimes. Because it is AWESOME.

It's my day off and I intend to take it easy ... since I'm going to spend Friday through Sunday (and probably a good chunk of Monday and Tuesday) working on papers and Power Point presentations. Argh! I mean, I have homework to do today, but I intend to do some FUN reading and writing, and some tv watching, and some shopping since my favorite black cotton top is getting frayed at the sleeves. :( It's been loved to death. It was so comfy and it went with absolutely everything.

And current works in progress: Mostly ST, though I haven't given up on that Epic Pern AU )

Also, in the comments of my last fic, someone offered up a recipe for a Vulcan mocha: )

This is kind of awesome: "Leopard Behind You!" by Olivia Judson, whom I really kind of love. It's about how animals inform one another that danger is lurking.

I ♥ science.

The NY Times has a Space & Cosmos Section to commemorate Apollo 11's successful mission to the moon, which happened 40 years ago today. It's got stuff on the lunar landing and NASA and where we're going next (!)

The whole idea of going off into space and seeing what's out there gives me such a thrill. Some of the photos are pretty amazing.

Sam: There are a lot of hungry people in the world, Mal, and none of them are hungry 'cause we went to the moon. None of them are colder and certainly none of them are dumber 'cause we went to the moon.

Mallory: And we went to the moon. Do we really have to go to Mars?

Sam: Yes.

Mallory: Why?

Sam: 'Cause it's next. 'Cause we came out of the cave, and we looked over the hill and we saw fire; and we crossed the ocean and we pioneered the west, and we took to the sky. The history of man is hung on a timeline of exploration and this is what's next.

To Harp and To Russian!

I can't read Russian, but I still find this very cool. I wish I knew what people were saying in the comments. I see happy emoticons, so I doubt they're flames. :)

Ben Brantley's review of the new "West Side Story" revival on Broadway.

I want to see this so badly! I don't care if it isn't perfect. I'm so intrigued by the idea of Tony and Maria with personalities.
thistlerose: (DINOSAURS!!!)
After posting about the dinosaur display at the Milwaukee Public Museum, I had to go looking for that video on YouTube. And I found it. Hee HEE! This makes me very happy. I loved this video when I was little. And I was right; part of it was definitely filmed at the Public Museum!

I think the last two parts were filmed back in 1980, and the first two parts - the ones with a very young Fred Savage - were from 1987.

This is awesome. I haven't seen this thing in twenty years.

Damn, that song is catchy. O_o

Struggling Mets Combine To Form Carlos Voltron

NEW YORK—Facing the Cubs in the midst of a three-game losing streak, the desperate Mets sprinted out to the field Tuesday, launched themselves high into the air above Shea Stadium, and combined their bodies to form a 400-foot tall fielding robot called Carlos Voltron.

Oh, my first fandom. I really miss you sometimes.

Funny: The Washington Post's 2008 Peeps Diorama Contest. I think I like the Andy Warhol one the best.

Idiotic things I heard yesterday:

1. "Snow on Easter refutes the global warming theory."

(Right, because snow in mid-March in Minnesota is completely unheard of.)

2. When asked to define goyim, a nurse at my mother's hospital replied, "White people."

(*facepalm* Jews: the other white meat.)

Funny thing I heard yesterday:

After relating the story of Purim to some co-workers, one asked me, "So, if the cookie is triangular to represent Haman's hat, does the fruit filling represent his braaaaaains?"

And cool:

Fossils of Oldest Rabbit Relative Found.

The Cat Whisperer. Though I'm getting tired of hearing animal therapists referred to as whisperers. Sometimes I wish I could...I don't know, restore Sophie to her original factory settings and start over with her. I love her madly, but she's so neurotic sometimes. I wonder if I did something wrong. Maybe I was too protective of her when she was little.

Brr, it's cold! It's -24 with the wind chill.

Don't forget to watch the total lunar eclipse tonight! It starts at 9:26 CST.

Also, this picture of the Crab Nebula is cool.

This warms the cockles of my heart: Celebrating the Semicolon in a Most Unlikely Location (via the NY Times).

Now, if only someone would use either to lay or to lie - correctly - in public. *sigh*
thistlerose: (fishapod)

It had stripes.

That's possibly the coolest thing I've heard all year.

I'm so glad I went to buy catfood exactly when I did, because if I hadn't, I'd have missed meeting Bella the 8-week old German Shepherd. I'm not sure how I got home, having died from teh cute.

[ profile] heidi8 posted this on her journal earlier, so many of you have probably seen it, but if you haven't, it's worth a look.

Someone threw together a trailer for a Titanic sequel.

The story will go on and on and on and on and... )

I love Massachusetts!

If it were a man, I'd marry it. If it were a woman, not only would I marry it, I could.

I want this book. It has pictures of creatures from the deepest parts of the ocean. The NYTimes has some of the pictures here and they're so cool!

Guys, please put large images behind cuts. That includes YouTube things. I've been trimming my flist. I'm perfectly aware of what an ornery bitch that makes me. No need to say it. :)

Any Peter Beagle fans in the New York area? He's going to be in town next weekend and there's a chance to actually meet him. I got this from his newsletter: Read more... )

This is what I wish had happened on last night's Grey's. Not sure why I'm cutting it since it's not a spoiler, but... Addison and... )
