thistlerose: (librarians)
The plan is to leave Maryland very early tomorrow morning, before sunrise if possible. If my car is going to break down on the Turnpike, I want it to happen when there isn't a lot of traffic. Though, so far, it's been behaving suspiciously well.

This is my last reference shift! At least at this library. *sigh* I'll miss it, though mostly for my co-workers. I'm really looking forward to working exclusively with graduate students. I feel like I'll have fewer conversations that go like this:

Me: Hi, can I help you?
Student: Yeah, I need some scholarly journals. (They tend to use journals and articles interchangeably.)
Me: Okay. What's your topic?
Student: I don't know.

Well, that narrows it down. :\

Anyway, most of my stuff is packed. There's a big pile of boxes and bags in my room right now, and looking at it makes me antsy. I need to know that it's all going to fit in my car, but I can't pack the car right now. And I'm not getting home until this evening, since I'm having lunch and seeing "The Hobbit" with a friend after work. *wrings hands*

It'll work out. Because it has to.

Pictures of Lloyd helping me pack yesterday. )

Another fun day of packing. I think things are going well, but we'll see for sure when I start to load up the car. I always think my trunk is bigger than it really is.

Eight said something about wishing he could keep the presidents book that his teacher lent him. I suggested that Santa might get him an even nicer book about the presidents for Christmas, and he got upset. Apparently a book is not an acceptable Christmas present because Santa wouldn't waste his time on something like that. Because "It's just a cheap thing you can get in the store for like four dollars!" He really, really wants a book he can keep, but not for Christmas. Er, he might get one anyway, unless I can find a fun game about the presidents. No clue what I'm getting his little brother, Four.

Since I've been packing, there are boxes everywhere, and Lloyd needs to sit in each one.

Btw, thank you to everyone who gave their advice re. Avatar. I've decided to watch all three seasons, then catch up with Korra later. I've only seen four episodes of Avatar, but so far I like it.

I'm working tomorrow, so if anyone wants to take a stab at guessing which Remix Madness fic(s) I wrote before the reveal... I'll write you a drabble if you get at least one right. (Current fandoms only.) Comments are screened.

For the past two months I've been getting to the gym at least three times a week (except for when I caught that weird bug and when I was in New York) and I feel good. Tired, but good. I think my arms are getting stronger, which is exciting! I'll never have perfect Michelle Obama arms, but this is the aim.

I download the Instagram app the other day and I've been playing with it. Behold the cuteness of Lloyd in a box. )
thistlerose: (lloyd)
My mom sent me a box of cookies for Valentine's Day, all tied up with a pink ribbon. I enjoyed the cookies. Guess who's having fun with the ribbon?

Lloyd at play. )

It was pointed out that all my recent cat pic spams have been of Lloyd, so here is one for Sophie. I love Lloyd to pieces and he amuses me endlessly, but Sophie is like an extension of my soul or something. I'm the only person in the world that this cat seems to trust, and that means a lot to me. I mean, I wish she weren't such a scaredy cat, but since she is, I'm very protective of her. :)

Sophie through the years. )

In short, she's a nutcase, but and I love her.
thistlerose: (seasonal: autumn)
Hello, from Maryland. So, on Friday I drove for a long time, and now I'm here. I keep getting tearful, especially when I look at maps. This morning I sat in my car for a few minutes, sniffling over AAA's triptyk. I don't know if that's because I'm cracking from the strain or homesick or unhappy or what. It's pretty here. My landlady seems nice, though I think she's kind of a hoarder. At least she's moving her crap out of my bedroom. Her property is very pretty, though. And she has horses! They're nice. So, I think this might work as a short-term solution, though I really, really, really want my own place.

The cats seem happy. Sophie runs and hides whenever she hears people moving around downstairs, but Lloyd is cool. I think he could be happy any place that doesn't have garden hoses.

I'm in a Starbucks right now. I just drove past my place of employment to see where it is. There's free parking outside, I think. Hallelujah.

Anyway. Here's another smallish pic spam of Lloyd In Things. (I made a Tumblr as requested, btw. It's here. There's nothing there yet, though.)

With bonus Sophie In Things. )
thistlerose: (lloyd: neighborhood watch)
I was going to post my thoughts about the 10th anniversary of 9/11, but truthfully, my day wasn't particularly interesting. 9/11/01 was Senior Breakfast, and my housemates got me up at what felt like ass o'clock, but was probably more like 7:30. I didn't want to go, but one of them said I had to, or I'd look back and remember this day and wish I'd gone to breakfast at the Alumnae House.

Before this devolves into a political rant, here's a pic spam of Lloyd and all the things he likes to get into.

And one thing he doesn't like to get into. )

Also, this is the pile of books I sorted through yesterday. There are more in the boxes, which you can't see. )

To Mrs. Reynolds' Cat
John Keats

Cat! who hast pass'd thy grand climacteric,
How many mice and rats hast in thy days
Destroy'd? -- How many tit bits stolen? Gaze
With those bright languid segments green, and prick
Those velvet ears -- but pr'ythee do not stick
Thy latent talons in me -- and upraise
Thy gentle mew -- and tell me all thy frays
Of fish and mice, and rats and tender chick.

Nay, look not down, nor lick thy dainty wrists --
For all the wheezy asthma, -- and for all
Thy tail's tip is nick'd off -- and though the fists
Of many a maid have given thee many a maul,
Still is that fur as soft as when the lists
In youth thou enter'dst on glass-bottled wall.

It's my Sophie's seventh birthday. Happy birthday, darling evil one. ♥

*sigh* I don't think I can deny it any longer. My favorite jeans are frayed beyond repair. Which means I now have exactly one pair that fits me and aren't frayed. And I don't even like that pair very much. I got it because it was on sale. *grumble* I could replace the favorite pair. The company that made them (I got them in 2003) still makes that style. And I still think they're sexy. But they're expensive ($80 plus shipping to the US - they're Australian). I just bought an $80 rain coat. I don't know if I should shell out for jeans. (Yes, I know. There are less expensive options. But I want those jeans. I got them in Australia after spending a year in Japan where almost nothing fit me. So they have associations! Actually, the shipping isn't that bad. It's about what it would be within the US. O_o)

Where can I get nice jeans that won't break my wallet? I've decided I don't like the Gap very much anymore. Also, I'm short (5'3") and curvy and I like jeans that sit lowish on my hips.

The story so far )

Day 21 – Another moment

The other day I was talking about how I tend to over-think things and miss opportunities as a result. Not always, though. Not quite seven years ago, I was in the market for a kitten. My beloved cat Data had died in 2003, and a few months ago, I'd had to have one of my other cats, Pippin, euthanized. I wanted a cat who needed me, but who was also young and cute. (Both Data and Pippin had died young, Data at 8, Pip at 5.) I was going to look at this one kitten, who, I swear, belonged in a kitten calendar. She was so cute. And apparently sweet. But first I went to this other shelter to see what they had.

They had a lot of really tiny black kittens who swarmed all over my feet like dust motes. (I'd never seen such tiny, fearless kittens.) And they had this one tuxedo kitten, who was sort of curled up in a corner. The black kittens were too young to be adopted, and really, so was the little tux, but since I already had another cat - Will - the woman who ran the shelter said I could take her home. If I wanted her.

I picked up this kitten, who probably just wanted to huddle in her corner. I scratched her little ears until she just went limp across my knees, purring. Objectively speaking, she wasn't that cute, as kittens go. (Sorry, Sophie.) She wasn't especially friendly or outgoing. (Kind of an understatement. She'll behave for the vet, for some reason, but we're about the only people she'll allow to handle her. She hides under the furniture when people come over. She bit my sister. *g*) People ask me why in the world I adopted this cat. It's because I know me. I over-think things. I worry about things that happened years and years ago. I knew that if I got up and left this kitten, I'd wonder about her forever. That would have sucked for both of us, so I turned to the woman and said, "I want her." And that was that.

I never did meet the calendar kitten. I assume she was adopted. A kitten that adorable will find a home.

So, I have my neurotic girl. And I wouldn't trade her for anything. )

The rest of the days )
thistlerose: (MLP: Twilight Sparkle)
Okay, so I started watching "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" the other night. The cuteness is almost too much for me. Twilight Sparkle!

So, we've had cats that look like Hitler (one of whom happens to live with me). Now we have a cat who looks like Lenin. I keep looking at her and cracking up at the desk. Fortunately, when you're a librarian, cats are always an excuse for levity.

2 Chanukah fics written and posted, 1 Yuletide fic posted, 2 fandom_stocking fics posted and 2 more in the works... I guess my muse is back from wherever he buggered off to last month. Hello, muse.

Got a rejection letter from the Washington County Public Library System. Which I'd kind of been expecting. They required someone with a high school diploma, and I have a Master's. Still. Grrr.

But anyway, we put our solstice tree up the other night. And my cats did silly things. And I took pictures. )

  • Mom's birthday present: purchased

  • Brother's care package: assembled

  • More clay snowmen: er ... constructed

  • Yuletide sign up: accomplished

I offered to write for eight fandoms this year, most of which I'd written for in previous years. I don't usually do that. This year, what with my other commitments and up-in-the-air status, I don't feel like being challenged. I just want to be able to write a good story quickly. For all but one fandom, I said I'd write any character, any genre. The exception was Voltron. I have this fear that I'll be asked to write Lotor in an heroic and/or woobie-fied role, and I just can't. (Though I'll happily write him as the villain he is.) But I offered to write all the pilots and the princesses.

  • I'm mostly caught up on the television I missed last week. I think the only thing I still have to watch is Monday's "Castle." I actually liked last week's "Glee." Minor spoilers. )

As for last week's "Fringe," at first I was: O_o But then I was kind of: \o/ Minor spoilers. )

  • I haven't made much progress on my [ profile] space_wrapped story because every time I sit down to write it, this happens: Kitty pile! )
  • thistlerose: (magic)
Looking forward to my Milwaukee/Chicago/Madison trip next week. So very very not looking forward to the drive. I have three days in Chicago. I'm definitely going to see the dollhouse (and the Jim Henson exhibit!) at the Museum of Science and Industry. Not sure what else. This will be my fourth trip to Chicago.

Anyway, this is how the snowmen and dinosaurs turned out after I, uh, turned them into things. )

Per this meme: Ask me to take a picture of any aspect of my life that you're interested in - it can be anything from the house I live in to my favorite shoes. Leave your choice here as a comment, and I will reciprocate by taking the pictures and posting them as an LJ entry. That way you get to know a little bit about my life, if you're remotely interested in it.

Uh, everything is safe for work )

Anything else you'd like to see?
    thistlerose: (coffee)
Mentally, I am in such a weird place right now. I slept for like 6 1/2 hours. Now I'm awake and exhausted, but still kind of bouncing off the walls. I had to isolate myself because I can't stop talking. (Mom says it's because I've been a whirlwind of activity for the past two weeks. And also I drove a frickin truck for 7+ hours yesterday.) I imagine she's right. When she mentioned doing the breakfast dishes, I bounced up and said "Me me me me me!!!"

This second cup of coffee? Should probably not have been drunk by me.

I am going to crash hard tonight. Fortunately, I don't have to return the truck until Sunday, and my stepdad and younger stepbrother are coming over tonight to help unload it. *yawn*

I know I need to just lie down and be calm, maybe with a movie, but. I. can't. I wonder if I could write. I have like 15 plot bunnies in my head. I started writing my very first Mirror 'verse fic the other night. It's kind of bizarre, and I'll probably make a post about it later so I can bounce ideas off people.

    I don't know how to calm down!!!!!1111

I got this via one of the vets I used to see in Minnesota:

We wanted you to be aware of the following food recall from Procter & Gamble (P&G):

P&G announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of Iams ProActive Health Cat and Kitten Food in 3-oz. and 5.5-oz. cans. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in North America only. This recall is due to incorrect levels of thiamine--an essential part of the cat diet. Dates on the bottom of the recalled cans range from 09/2011 to 06/2012.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. Cat owners using this product should monitor their cat for signs of thiamine deficiency, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea, and salivation. Advanced signs of thiamine deficiency may include seizures, falling, circling, or downward curving of the neck. If your cat is pregnant or experiencing health issues, please make an appointment for an exam.

For further information or a product refund, call P&G toll-free at 877-340-8826 (Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM EST).

Remember, this affects only Iams ProActive Health Cat and Kitten Food in 3 oz. and 5.5 oz. cans marked with the dates identified above. For more detailed product information, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website.

I suppose Sophie would indulge in similar antics if she weren't so, uh, fluffy. Whatever.

I give you Lloyd in a paper bag. )

    History take-home of EVIL: finished
    Leftover Indian food: microwaved
    DVD: inserted
    Ficlet: to be written afterward
    Headache: gah

But! That's six final projects down, with only four to go. And one of them is really like a tiny appendage of another, so it's more like three and a half to go. Whee!

But first, a couple new photos of my brand new kitty: because he's so cute! )
